Site too slow

by MeowChow (Vicar)
on Dec 30, 2001 at 03:50 UTC ( [id://135178]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

For the last few months, this site has been unusably slow, when I'm logged in. Often I wait a minute or more for a page to display, though at other times, pages may come up at normal speed.

I'm on an virtually unutilized T1 with consistent 50-60ms pings to perlmonks.com, so network connectivity is certainly not the issue. I'm almost positive the problem is related to my account, since I experience the problem both at work and at home, and only when logged in.

Is anyone else experiencing such serious intermittent slowdowns? Could an editor possibly log into my account and see if (s)he can recreate the problem?

Try deselecting the CPAN and Everything nodelets if you have them selected as suggested by ybiC. It seems to have worked for me -- I'm no longer getting slow page loads like I was.

I, too have recently been experiencing slowdowns. In my case, I though it might have something to do with the firewall/proxy-server(s) have here at work, but it seems to happen on my own office machine as well. For the record I only have the following nodelets running:

      • Chatterbox
      • personal nodelet
      • Other Users
      • leftovers
      • approval nodelet

I don't use either the CPAN or Everything nodelets... it's still slow for me.

BTW, can anyone explain to me the difference between the frontpage nodelets and Non-Frontpage nodelets (I haven't really been able to determine when I ought to be seeing my Non-Frontpage nodelets.

I´ve found that logging in from any screen other than The Monastery Gates seems to clear up the clog for me. I´ve been experiencing the same problem from cafes all over the world.

Though I´ve had the CPAN nodelet disabled, I´ll now try it with the Everything Developer nodelet disabled, as suggested above, and see if that changes anything for me.

Update: Disabling the Everything nodelet seems to have done the trick for me.

Judging by this and other threads the main problem for most people seems to be the cpan nodelet. I was having connection problems, including a lot of timeouts, so I turned off the cpan nodelet and everything sped up for a bit. When my connection times started getting bad again, I just turned off everything but the chatterbox and other users, and it's been working fine since then.

So what you probably want to do is try turning the cpan nodelet off, if that doesn't work just turn all of your nodelets off and progressively add them back again and figure out what's the problem.

Also I'm sure a visit to the Offering Plate wouldn't hurt the site's times either :)

Well, I've disabled the CPAN nodelet as you and elusion have suggested, and that has definitely improved things, though the problem persists. About every ten minutes, I have to wait a minute or two before pages start loading again. I'll try systematically removing other nodelets to see if I can narrow down the problem.

Regarding your suggestion of visiting the offering plate, I would venture that this is more of a task for pmdev than anything else. I doubt that throwing extra hardware or bandwidth at this problem will resolve it.

I'm playing around with the EveryThing Engine myself and my box is on a very fast pipe. It too seems to be a little slow in bringing up the main page. I think the site is being slowed down due to database access. A lot of functions are stored in the database as well as all the information from each node. So it seems that the DB is doing double duty.

On a separate note, it seems that The Everything Development Company is having a problem. So I have a mirror of the pre-1.0 engine download here along with a few nodeballs I had on hand. My way of saying "Thank you" to the main developers of the engine.

It takes me like 2 minutes to load the Newest Nodes link, but everything else works just fine. Wonder what's wrong with the newest node thing.

Have you clicked the "I've checked all of these" button lately? If you use it and haven't clicked it for a while, the page may have become very big, causing it to take a long time to load. Hope this helps,

Hey, how about clicking on the "Donate Now" link and giving some money over to the good people who operate this site? Then they might be able to afford new computers or better hosting. There are so many times that I have come here looking for answers only to find exactly what I need really fast. Surely it's worth a few bucks to everyone. I like chicken.
