'Experience: non yet' is wrong

Hello, all!

Now again one of my stupid remarks.

As I've asked question here, I, in accordance to my expectations, got a lot of downvoting, and a lot of upvoting.

Nothing wrong with it. But one little misbehaviour remains. My XP level sometimes grows a little, sometimes becames negative, and sometimes equals to zero. When it equals to zero I see at XP level title "None yet".

None yet is *wrong* because it is in my case "None once more"!

Just to notice misbehaviour.

From an engineering point, I'm sure that the code that returns that string simply examines your current experience value, instead of your entire experience history. While it might be more accurate to include that search in the code, I would recommend against it because of the presumed hit on performance it would impose for all home node hits.

Update: A patch has been applied to the relevant section. When you have no XP, the system now reports, "None earned."

I'm sure that as you continue to participate, you'll work past this little problem. It might be worthwhile to take a gander at Turnstep's home node for links to other nodes outlining some participation strategies.

might a check on current xp value and number of posts be a closer approximation to xp history without sacrificing (much) performance?

i don't know much about what goes on here behind the scenes, but i can't imagine this solution would cause a noticable performance degradation. i would argue, however, that this is an edge case, and i'm sure there are more important issues which affect the experience of a larger number of users--there would be little gain from this change.

We could kill two birds with one stone.

Rather than None yet, the phrase could simply be replaced with Nothing learned yet. This runs the risk of alienating new users, but accurately captures both aspects of users with zero XP as it pertains to the culture of this site.

BTW, your English has improved markedly in your last several posts.

Assuming you will have positive XP in the near future and have None yet, the phrase is correct either way. Glass is half full, glass is half empty..

Actually, even if negative experience was expected, "none yet" could still be the phrase used. Negative experience is experience nonetheless.

Given the fact that you can read the site just fine without registering, the assumption that whoever registers does intend to post at some point in time is not an unreasonable one.

Actually, you can also post without registering. But that doesn't weaken the assumption much, as posting as Anonymous Monk makes one's posting history hard to track and rules out the possibility of forming an online persona. Registering is a prerequisite for both, but so is posting - therefor, it still is a good assumption that registering implies the intention to post.
