a simple question requires a simple answer with no patronisation. Perlmonks is supposed to be a friendly place :). There is nothing wrong with Abigail-II's reply. It clearly pointed out the problem, told you why you should avoid it, and provided a solution. You should not interpret someone emphasizing a point as patronizing you.
