Problem with ASP/Perlscriptby the_slycer (Chaplain)

the_slycer has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:
Ok, I give up!
Here's some code taken directly from an ASP/Perlscript page that I am playing with. I have it working properly as a regular cgi, but for speed, and being stuck with IIS, I thought I'd give the ASP bit a try.
I'm now running back to cgi with my tail between my legs.
So, you can see the commented out bit there. Leaving it as is, the user name prints properly - ie: auser. Uncommenting that concatentation, the user name prints like "Win32::OLE=HASH(0xd801834).jpg".
To say I'm confused is an understatement. Note that I've tried simply create a (static) hash in an alternate script, grab a key out of there, print it, concantate it etc, it all works fine. For some reason, this one does not.
I'm simply curious as to whether or not anybody has seen this same type of behaviour in ASP/Perlscript before.
