PPM is probably easier, but who likes change, good ol' make on linux for me...i tried to use the CPAN.pm once a while back, it was like 4 in the morning, i was half asleep, and whatever i did, it starting installing perl...on a P266 that takes quite a while, and at 4 in the morning i wasnt too happy, so i'll probably stick with make, its more fun anyway :-p

Older versions of the CPAN module will do that. Fetch a fresh CPAN.pm tarball and install it manually, then you'll be able to use the CPAN shell from there on without it pigheadedly insisting on upgrading your Perl.

Makeshifts last the longest.

I was bit by that too. I believe that problem was fixed, or at least it will prompt.
