Hmm .. being as I was alive to enjoy Abbey Road when it was released, I can't really identify with questions about Rap Stars. About the only one I can recall enjoying (let alone identifying) is Will Smith, at the end of Men In Black and also as his persona DJ Jazzy Jeff with Parents Just Don't Understand (a great video).

I've heard of Run-DMC and some of the other artists (TuPac, Dr. Dre), but apart from that, most Rap is beyond my musical horizon. All it brings to mind is huge attitude, guns and violence. Hmm, sort of like rock'n'roll in the 70's, I guess.

I prefer hands-off Project Managers. Tell me what to do, give me the resources to do what I know how to do, let me give you a demo every once in a while (weekly at the current job -- it's great!) and everything will be peachy.

Can't really relate that to a Rap Star. You could have asked about Spanish matadors or Australian Rules Football stars and I would have been equally baffled.

It's refreshing to see someone from the same musical era as me. I too was around when Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road were released. I also remember punched cards - my first programs were submitted on decks of cards.

If Ali Gee were an option, I would have picked him, as he is parodying the whole DJ and rap thang. As it is, I would go with joshua's suggestion - "What?"

Now yer talkin' .. George Clinton did a wicked song called something like Do You Want Fries (With That Shake) that came with a very funny video. Very funky and groovy. If there's music in it, that's cool. The same beat pattern looped ad nauseam, a single bass note, people shouting attitude over top of each other .. I can't really get into that.

Of course, Guess Who's American Woman was totally different from that, right? :)

Wow. This is a toughie... Nowadays there are SOOOO menay choices...It's like choosing a single Guitar God in the 70's...no matter who you choose you feel like someone's being left out...

Thought I'm very tempted to choose FlavorFlav due to his unbridled enthusiasm, I would opt for Chuck D since his Public Enemy songs reflect more intelligence IMHO...

Busta Ryhmes might be a good motivator since he admitted that he used to sell crack..

And as for creative inspiration I'm thinking B Real (of Cypress Hill) would supply the goods..

But, having actually seen all of these guys live, I'm going to have to go with King Adrock of the Beastie Boys. No one comes close to his energy level. I remember years ago when they headlined Lollapoluzzalayayayoyodynde and he was off the hook.

Oh & before y'all start thinking that you can discern something about me from these comments...I'm much closer to the guy in Office Space turning down his radio while driving through the 'hood so he doesn't get shot at than some script-kiddie-wannabe-gangbanger. I go to to lots of very diverse concerts. By far the best shows I've ever seen are a heated tie between Jane's Addiction & Deep Purple.

It might be an interesting poll to ask what kind of music people listen to when they code. I think it actually makes a difference in your concentration level. I for one, listen to techno...

It all depends. If I have a bead on what I'm doing, I like Punk Rock. If I need a little inspiration, it's Techno-Industrial (Thrill Kill Kult, Ministry, Front Line Assembly). Sometimes, I just need to drown everyone out and essentially turn my ears off. For that, I put on headphones with some ambiant techno or trance. I'm not really a fan of the stuff, but it's really easy to ignore while it's drowning out office chatter.

If I was just starting out, I'd opt for Dr. Dre, he got Eminem off the ground, so he's got to be a good motivator and mentor. But at this point, I'm happier with a manage who just kind of hangs back and says, "That's cool" (Or rather, says whatever cool people say, I'm sure it's not 'cool') without interfering with me. I voted other for I'd like to have Thomas D. as Project Manager. He's one of the frontmen from the german rapgroup Die Fantastischen Vier, and he is really great. Especially he has a tendency to preach a lot in songs (listen to his latest project Son Goku), so I guess that makes him a perfect Project Manager.

I had to choose other. Rap is less common in Australia than in some other places and although I really enjoyed the two rap youth presentations I have attended neither of their names were in the list.

We need a "Who?" or "None of them" kind of option. I like my boss the way she is. I think a rapping boss would drive me nuts.

I know I'm six months late pointing this out, but it was Sid Vicious who covered "My Way", not Johnny Rotten.

It may seem like a small thing, but speaking as a scholar of the period, there's a world of difference between the two. Lemme see if I can offer a comparison:

Johnny Rotten is to Sid Vicious as Kevin Smith is to Jason Mewes.

John had very specific ideas about music, fashion, and society which he expressed through his style and lyrics despite a complete lack of vocal talent and formal education. For a brief shining period, he was able to embody the fear and loathing of a society that was collapsing upon itself. One 19-year-old kid became England's Public Enemy Number One through his lyrics, attitude, and grooming. Not since Elvis has a pop musician had such a dramatic effect in such a short time. Post-breakup, he alone had the foresight to retain the rights to his music, and the brains and balls to fight for what was rightfully his (it took 15 years, but he won). And, post-Pistols, he had a respectable career fronting PiL.

Sid Vicious was a deeply damaged man-child who was completely unable to cope with success on any level. He couldn't play, had no ideas, and no emotional defenses to protect him from the demands of fame and stresses of infamy. Fun fact: on the Sex Pistols' one album, all Sid's bass lines are overdubbed by Glen Matlock. Sid was brought into the Pistols because of his attitude, not for anything resembling talent. He was a nasty, brutish gutter punk who became the worst rock-and-roll casualty of all time.

Should be Missy Elliott for at least 2 reasons:
She's one of my favourite rappers and she's got her style of her own;
plus she's not only a rapper but also a producer, so maybe she's got more brains than most o'dem others.
One reason against Missy as a project manager might be that everyone must work hard (I guess) but that's OK for me when working on a *good* project.
