During nap time you will forget that
- management is clueless;
- you don't get to write as much Perl as you'd like;
- you don't get paid well;
- you don't telecommute (even when it snows);
- you are not allowed to listen to Rush Limbaugh;
- ... and so on.
Needless to say, I voted nap time!

Definately all of these!
Clueful management, Better compensation, Listening to the radio at a reasonable volume, More coding, Nap time, Getting to rewrite the automated poll producing code

But you are in management. Does this mean you need a clue? :)

Having just left an independent consulting gig (i.e., working from home) the one thing I miss is being able to crash in my own bed. I'd just lay on top of the covers, and my internal alarm clock would wake me 45 minutes later, totally recharged and ready to go.
The full-time gig rocks, but I sure wish I could park myself in a cupboard somewhere to recharge those batteries when the occasional After Lunch Lull sets in.

Phew, this is a tough one. Having clueful management is always a bonus, I almost chose that. Better compensation - always a nice thing, I almost chose that too.
The one thing that would make going to work more agreeable would be telecommuting so that I would not have to go to work anymore :-)
Could happen.

Definitely clueful management for me as I work for my wife's family.
The nice things are though:
- I *do* get to use Perl, although nobody there understands what the hell I'm doing. It's usually enough for them to retrieve e-mail.
- I do get "nap time" since I have my own office, an air matress, and a pillow.
- having my own office means I can usually play whatever I want on the radio - usually BBC Radio 6 - and the volume usually indicates my mood - the louder the music the worse mood ;)
On the other hand, better compensation would be nice. Telecommuting too, but then I'd miss the daily chariot races to San Francisco. ;)
There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling now. | [reply] |

I'm all for more money. Last time, they gave me more stock, which is SO 90s.
The one thing I can think of is that I have to do QA. My actual job is to write tools, automate test procedures, and do performance testing. I'd like to dump all the functional testing and do perl full time.
Continuing through the list, I don't want a more clueful manager. I don't actually have a manager. If anyone above the person I report to was given one clue point as to what I do and how I do it, I'd be in hell. It would mean that some pointy-haired management type was going to start looking over my shoulder, and telling me my job. Just pick any Dilbert cartoon at random. There you go.
As far as the rest:
- I already listen to the radio at a reasonable volume. If I want an UNreasonable volume, I use headphones.
- If I need to telecommute, I do.
- I already have "Nap Time". Everyone else calls it the staff meeting.
OK, fine, I also have a list of hardware I'd like ranging from a couple of DIMMs to a cluster of Sun Blades. And I wouldn't say no to a bigger monitor. And a puppy.

I think the most important one is missing. That would be more hiring so we would not have to wear so many hats at work. I think a lot of us work in departments that have had significant layoffs and are having to do way more work than normal. At least that is the case where I work. So I would say
an upswing in corporate spending would make going to work way more agreeable.

JSchmitz, that sounds awfully familiar. Now that our develoment group has been somewhat trimmed I now have have the "pleasure" of maintaining PL/SQL and Java code as well as Perl. To make life a little more interesting our DBA left last week to go onto bigger and better things. Rumor has it that there will be no replacement because "the Programmers can do it" :-(

Hear, hear. When the economy improves a lot of companies are going to find out a hidden cost of making people wear too many hats - poor employee retention. Many people are just sitting tight until things improve, then they are outta there...

Definately more coding. I've been so busy with all the day to day crap that I've hardly touched my code for a couple months.

Hi all.
I used to work for a large bookstore chain. One particular day, I thought I would express what I thought was a good idea to the store manager. Seeing how he used to work for a software company and was quite familiar with computers in general, I suggested using a laptop with perl installed that could be used to accelerate the sorting of books before they were placed on the shelves. His initial reaction was 'Wow. Very cool idea.'. Feeling resonably empowered after I thought I had been seen as more than just another corporate drone, I went back to work with a smile on my face.
Sound of music in the background to indicate trouble was about to start
Another manager approached me in about an hour and hinted that my job was not to do anything other than was I was paid to do. Evidently, they were angered / intimidated by a free thinker. Within 6 months I resigned and went back to college.
So...a more clueful boss and the ability to use perl at work would be quite beneficial.
