Hi parv. Welcome to the monastery. This site is dedicated to Perl not Web Design. Perl is a high priority. Window dressing is a low one. FYI most of us here find the site perfectly functional for its desired purpose. I can understand if some monks take offense at someone who has been here all of a day and now deems themselves fully qualified to suggest changes to the site which, at the end of the day, make SFA difference to its function as a popular potal to all things Perl.

PM is moderated by its users so if you say something that most people disagree with you will find you accumutate negative gold stars and get told to stand in the corner, just like in 1st grade. So far you have a lot to say about site design and very little about Perl. A significant number of monks donate their time freely to maintain it.

Here is a little advice. Have a read of New Monks and the bit about asking questions. Make your next post Perl related. If your browser does not render the site to your liking get a new one - they are freely available. Oh and if you don't like the clock nodelet why not just turn it off.

    cheers

    tachyon

Yes, it is "somebody's feature". Dates and times on this site mostly fall into two groups. Originally, nearly all of the times were reported in terms of the server's local time. A while back, enhancements were made to improve this situation. This enhancement lets you pick a real timezone (you used to be stuck with a offset from GMT) and a format for date/times to be displayed in.

Only some of the places where date/times are displayed have been updated to use this new feature. So you'll mostly see lots of times in a fixed format in terms of the server's local time and some times in a you-select format in a you-select time zone. So "tick tock" shows you both of these time displays that are common on the site.

At some point, most of the old time displays will be updated and the first entry will be removed from the "tick tock" nodelet.

This is why you should spend more time becoming familiar with the site before jumping to conclusions about how to improve upon it.

No one gets paid to work on this type of stuff for this site and all of those who do work on it have little spare time for it. Features of the inner design of the site make it difficult to delegate reprogramming tasks. We've put a lot of work into improving that situation and I'm starting to see signs that this work is starting to pay off.

If you have similar questions in the future, you might have more luck asking in the chatterbox (and check out a few of the many, many resources for helping new members adjust).

Sorry for the rough introduction. I hope you stick around long enough to get some real benefit out of the site.

thanks tye for the detailed explanation.

i did notice that some time strings are in user specified format, some are not. i would have asked about that too. given the overwhelming theme of Obliterate Anything You Do Not Like Without Comment, i did not. and you have already answered that question too.

as to jumping to conclusion... how would i have known about two time strings even after a month without asking the question?

as long as my somewhat thick skin does not totally wear out and i get relevant replies to queries, i will remain a regiesterd user.

Believe it or not, sometimes people figure things out without being told. (: I won't tell you exactly how I would have figured that out without being told; I'll let you figure it out. :)

But let me repeat for emphasis something I said before:

If you have similar questions in the future, you might have more luck asking in the chatterbox

Good luck with that skin condition (it can be quite a problem when using the internet) and, again, welcome.

                        - tye

P.S. Yes, I know some of the on-line help for the site is out of date or incomplete. The people who do that don't get paid either and have real lives as well. But my master plan to light a fire under their collective butts is near completion...

parv, please don't interpret this as rudeness, but for someone who created an account here only yesterday, you've got a little too much to say about how this site works. Please familiarize yourself with it and our practices before citing any further "problems". For your edification, go to your user settings, and select the Information nodelet. There you will find quite a few resources that we have to assist new members become acquainted with the Monastery.

    best, fever

Please don't think I'm trolling but I read a usability article some time ago that put forward an interesting point:

Your newest users are often your best critics.

If one person posts to ask about this, there is a decent probability that there are others who are too timid to ask.

That thought did cross my mind Ionizor, but the utter triviality of parv's concerns is what turned me off to them. Had they been about, say, the webpage not loading when a nodelet was activated, or a truly confusing aspect to a critical function like posting new nodes, then I'd pay attention. Being that this is a website by geeks and for geeks (run by volunteers no less), my opinion is that if you cannot find a workaround for such minor issues as modifying the way your text appears in some arcane browser, perhaps this isn't the right place for you.
