cpan shell

Dear Monks,

Can anyone please link to a workable guide for installation and configuration of the cpan shell. I reinstalled Linux and I don't seem to be able to get the shell to do its job.

Jeremy Mates' Life with CPAN article may be of some use if you are having problems. Also, if you haven't done so, read perldoc CPAN.

If that doesn't help, perhaps let us know what problems you are having, and any error messages, and some kind Monk can give you a hand.

you might want to start with CPANPLUS. it's a much better alternative, in my opinion. see kudra's homenode for more links.

That sounds quite strange, since the CPAN module is a bundled one: if you have perl on your system you really should have CPAN, too.

Which distribution are you using? Does

locate CPAN.pm

return anything?

I have the CPAN shell. But it doesn't seem to work. For example:

I think you need to reconfigure your CPAN module: look at this:

    cpan_home          y

It seems that you answered "y" to the question that asked where to put the cpan cache; being "y" a relative path, it will mess things up if the module does chdir somewhere. Just reconfigure and put something a reasonable path in, e.g. /var/cache/cpan. It should work.

How do I solve this problem? Do I need to change the bash setup? Time for me to look back at my linux book I think.
