The first thing you need to do is put out that nasty fire. Run outside, quick!, and get the garden hose. After you've hosed down the computer a few minutes, you can turn the water off and bring the hose back outside.

Next, place your PC inside the oven, turning the oven on to about 400°F. You should leave it in there until the case is good 'n hot. There should also be plenty of smoke.

Finally, do you have a second story to your house? If you do, then bring the PC up there and gently toss the computer out the window onto the lawn. This should dislodge any of the charred bits that may have accumulated inside the computer case.

    I hope this helps!

BTW: In the remote event that you're actually serious, please don't follow these instructions.

Where do you want *them* to go today?

I am upvoting the post because it made me laugh, and if the OP really is 12, I commend hir for using the past participial form of the verb.

    Yay!!

--- UPDATE --- Well mum is really getting hot in the head. Thanks for the help, I'm gonna have to take it to shop to be fixed. I opened the case and found mounds of kitty hair and ramen noodles shoved in the vents...i think that's what crashed it. Well, thanks anyway :(
I'm going to assume that you are either an extremely lazy slob or that you have a younger sib who is. *winces* Either way, "ramen noodles shoved in the vents" ... that's not a very Perlish issue.

People, how gullible can you be? This is obviously someone pulling your leg. 12? VB on Linux? Ramen noodles in the vents? Flames? Give me a broked.
      1. VB is installable on Linux ... anyone heard of WinE?
      2. I was programming at the ripe old age of 9 ... using Basic.
      3. I will never be surprised at the things people pull with computers. (CD Drive / Cupholder ... the pedal broken (trying to use the mouse like a foot-driver sewing machine ...)
      4. If there were ramen noodles and cat-fur in the vents, it very easily could've burst into flame.
I'm not saying the posting is true ... I'm saying it's theoretically possible.

At least the cat hair is. I had a monitor go out once due to excessive cat hair. My cat, when he was smaller, found that the monitor was a wonderfully warm place to sleep while I was on the PC. $75 later, the monitor was working again...

There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling now.

Please. I was also programming at age 9 (as were many here no doubt), and have seen a computer burn its power supply, and have run Wine. It doesn't change the fact that this is obviously a joke post.
      My thoughts exactly.

9463xp and you're still surprised at this? I'd have thought you'd have figured it out by now...

I know this is a really old thread but someone just linked to it and I had to reply to "Flames?"

My first week on a new job (back in 2002 or 2003) my PC caught on fire over night. When I opened the case, I saw that the fire melted the network card, the CPU fan and part of the motherboard. (Probably roasted the CPU pretty good too.) Then I noticed the dust. There was an inch thick layer of dust over the entire front and back panels where the vents used to be. Everywhere else in the case had 1/4 to 1/2 inch of dust build up.

Apparently, the dust was so thick that air could no longer get in or out quickly enough. The fire consumed the available oxygen and snuffed itself out. I guess that company was pretty lucky that day. The entire office could have been destroyed had there been just a little less dust...

You cannot install VB on a Linux machine. Also, If this is a Linux box you are talking about it already comes with Perl installed. From the command line try typing perl -v.

Hi people, I didn't mean to cause such an uproar with my questions about the broken computer (I was serious about it). Mum has me eating dirt as punishment because all her banking notes are gone. Yes I DO have linux on the machine (with VB runn in an emulator thing). Perl wasn't installed because I didn't have enough room (I use gentoo) on the disk. Anyway, the computer guy says it was the packets of dried ramen noondle sauce being rubbed against the fan wires that caused the fire. I thought it was because I maxed out my harddrive or something installing perl!!! Anyway when I get my computer back (the fire burnt most of the mobo to a crisp) i cant wait to learn about perl. Sorry for causing the uproar i guess?!
I hope you'll be able to get the computer back soon. Meanwhile, while thinking about ramen.. you should try ramen recipes, they are not only good to blow up computers :P

Ha! Ha! Sorry I'm not laughing at you, but the irony of that is incredible! Let me assure you that perl did NOT cause your machine to burst into flames. Your computer probably had a fan die and the proccessor overheated or something of that nature. Was this actual fire, or smoke? If it was actually flaming, that's really weird, the wiring probably shorted shooting off sparks. BTW How did you post this if your computer won't start.

I'm betting you have a Microsoft OS and attempted to install/compile a linux version of Perl? Perhaps try activestate.
My guess is that his harddisk is full.

    Hi,

If your computer really started to smoke and flame, please turn it off, unplug it from the wall, and call the fire department if necessary.

Visual Basic should have nothing to do with your Perl install. I assume you're trying to install ActivePerl 5.6 or 5.8. There is plenty of fine documentation for installing and using ActivePerl.

Perhaps you can be more verbose about what your problem is? What errors are you seeing, what have you tried, and what did you expect to happen?

If you computer does not boot, at all, this is not a question for PerlMonks. Please consult a computer store or someone familar with PC hardware.

And please refrain from expressions like "shat flames". You might only be 12, but we'd like everyone to speak and act maturely. Thanks.

    Cheers,
    ibanix

    $ echo '$0 & $0 &' > foo; chmod a+x foo; foo;

i for one particularly enjoyed the expression with which you take issue: i found it concise and vivid and funny and would much rather take part in a conversation with a bit of gusto about it.

so I have --'d your post for being prim and humourless, and I offer you this reply mostly so that you can return the favour if you feel like it.

ps. if you want something crass to object to, try jokes that combine automatic weapons with operating system zealotry.

Monks, please! This is just a joke!

First, VB on linux, and try to uninstall it? And Perl cause crashes or flames in the OS? And 12!

Who really think that this is serious?! To many wrong things in one, or you believe in coincidence? Is just an anonymous making some joke in the monastery. Probably it thinks that we are foos when we "spend" our time trading our knowledge.
