But anyone can create their own server and decide for themselves which groups to carry and how long messages should be kept. You are not dependent on "some server".
There's no guarantuee that no messages will be lost.
And here we have Nodereaper that may delete posts.

And people can add headers to a message to request that archivers not store it.

And on Perlmonks people can edit their messages and delete the content.

Even running your own server doesn't guarantuee 100% reliability on any but the messages fed directly to your server. Messages sent to a newsgroup you carry but via a another news server may never reach you.

NodeReaper posts are actually still there - you can Visit Reaped Nodes and read the previous content. It is removed from immediate view, but not lost.

The last one is a good point - one might argue that PerlMonks could keep a full history of edits, but then one might also argue that archivers can ignore the headers requesting the message to be discarded.

    Makeshifts last the longest.

Oh, sure, but I can peer with as many servers that are willing to peer with me. Perlmonks, OTOH, is a single point of failure - if vroom decides to stop, all the information is gone. If people make mistakes, parts of Perlmonks could be wiped out as well.

I won't claim Usenet is 100% reliable, but I wouldn't bet everything of Perlmonks is still available after 10 years.
