Had to go for Other as my favourite activities are directly related to my "child within", namely, building snowmen and having a good old snowball fight... ;)

However... the winter here has been very mild to date, a couple of major frosts with puddles getting iced over (and BazB's dogs water dishes, poor things :) but no snow {sniff}.

I miss Scotland, English winters aren't any fun :-)

• Where's the road? (played during snow storms or blowing snow. For extra challenge, play at night)

• Where's my car 2? (played in large parking lots, after snow has covered all cars. Persons with car beepers are not allowed to play.)

Gambling

• Can I start my car? (on very cold mornings)
• Should I leave my car running all day, or will I run out of gas? (variation of above)
• Looking cool. (How long can I survive without my hat/gloves and winter coat because they don't flatter my image. - Popular game among young adults and teens.)

• Pass snow-plow on highway.

Slalom

• Drive with all-season tires. (s/all-season/no-season/ because they ain't good in summer, ain't good in winter)

Spectator sports

• Watch snow-removal operations.
• Watch people attempt to drive up steep hills. (played when streets are snow covered)

• Complain to others about how cold it is, but always remember a time when it has been colder.
• Laugh at other cities who come to a screeching halt when snow accumaltion exceeds 3cm.
• Use common greeting "S'cold eh?".

Actually, it's been a relatively cold winter here: ~(high 65F, low 50F) a lot of the time.

We flew to Los Angeles over the winter holidays and my mother actually told me, who lives in Northern Europe, to "dress warm". She's a native of North Carolina and should really know better.

I am forced to snicker at such comments. I mean... a low of 50ºF is the equivalent of 10ºC. Two days ago, we were at -45ºC, the equivalent of -23ºF -49ºF. Ha! :P

sorry but that's even funnier that you think that is cold. today it was like -5 degrees F and it didnt even feel that cold to me i went outside in a sweatshirt so yeah im pretty sure you have it pretty good where ever you are. chicago is freezing

my condolences.. we hit 10C last winter and had to bring in the couch and telly from the outdoor living area for a week and a half.. sheesh! 8)

Most of the year we have overnight minimums around 20-22C.. we're up to 25C overnight now..

Here in Manchester, NH, we have the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League (AHL), which happens to be the farm team for the Los Angeles Kings. And they play a GREAT game of hockey! Fights do happen on occasion, but not every game.

I used to really like playing in the snow, but lately we've had so little snow around here that I've taken to spending most of the winter calling people whiners when they complain about how "cold" it is on rainy days. ("Cold? Whaddaya mean, cold? This is awefully warm for January...") On the rare occasion it actually gets below freezing, I just go around smiling, making remarks like "Cool! It finally snowed!"

No, this doesn't tend to make me popular.

Picked skiing, though I'm currently transitioning to snowboarding. I tried it the first time a few years ago, but with a rental board that was poorly maintained and boots with major overhang. Came into the lodge that night, hit the bed at 7:00 pm, and didn't get up again until 9:00 the next morning. It hurt.

Bought my own board this year to force myself to learn it. Gone once so far. There was an awful a lot of ground on that hill, and I hit most of it face-first. But I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Sardinia is quite a warm place (we had only a couple of days under 0 Celsius weeks ago), so I guess I don't know what a really cold winter is. Anyway, I spent my two weeks of Christmas holidays sleeping; I spent a lot of time with my wife, too

One of my favorite winter activities is AFTER doing something outside on a particularly raw day whatever it was coming inside and makeing one or all of the following and consuming it:

• Hot Cocoa
• Hot Toddy
• Hot mulled wine/apple cider/rum/whatever
• Soup! I make a good soup! Good when coming in from the cold
and that list is in no particular order and is not all inclusive.

After having done one or more of the above a fire in the fireplace is good. Getting out one of the comforters and wrapping up in it in front of the fire with my wife makes it even better. After 26 years and 2 children it still is one of my favorite things.

So, winter and cold weather are just my excuse to do all that!

I picked "Going somewhere warm" since I just returned from my native Southern California, where it was hovering around 15-20 degrees Celsius. Now I am back home, where it is currently about 4 degrees (a warm day), I can only think about cheap flights to Italy, Portugal, or Spain.

I don't do this very often, but it's really cool. (In fact, it could be said that it's more than cool.) Just east of town there's a wide spot in the Olentangy, just about deep enough for swimming. Best time to go is when there's about an inch of snow on the ground.

We've had a rotten winter: temperatures dipping only as low as 20 F and no snow at all! The temperatures have mostly been above 40 F.

I really miss living in Fairbanks, but my wife won't move there.

As for my vote, it was a toss-up between cross-country skiing and snowboarding.

• UK, Christmas 1980: Very pleasant weather of about 15C on Christmas Day visiting my uncle and aunt on the way back from a work term in Germany. The grass was green, and my cousin Frances coasted up and down the road riding his bicycle, grinning at the gorgeous sunny weather.
• Mountain View, California, 1987: I think it dipped down to 33F one day in January, and all my co-workers came in wearing their ski jackets. I laughed and talked about driving to work with the window open and the heater on.
• Whistler, British Columbia, 1985, 1987 and 1989: Idyllic vacations spend getting up at 9am, having some quick breakfast, getting dressed for a day's skiing at one of the best slopes in North America, lunching at the top of the hill, finishing the day at 4pm at the bottom of the slope with a Kokanee, wandering by to the condo to get into bathing trunks and to pick up another beer, ending up in the hot tub for an hour before wandering back to the condo to get dressed for a fabulous restaurant meal, some dancing, only to collapse into bed at midnight .. and do it all over again the next day.
• Toronto, 2004: Last week it was -24C, -36C with the wind chill. Starting the car in the mornings was quite exciting, and the normally soft seats were rock hard it was so cold. Today, -1, and snow was melting everywhere in the bright sunshine.

Winter? It comes every year, folks. Yes, it's cold. Yes, we get snow. Accept it, deal with it, embrace it.

Personally I love to go bike riding during the winter. The cold has a nice contrast to yourself. 8) As a added bonus you don't have to feel guilty about the holiday eating (Thanksgiving, XMas, New Years Eve) after the bike ride.

Of course I can do without the snow. With snow on the road I can't ride using my racing road bike. 8( The reason is because I am very likly to get killed by black ice or snow that is on the road.

Being in California, I had to go with feigning ignorance of what cold weather is. One of my other favorite activities, though, is dragging my kids out on a "grueling" hike. Today we trekked up to Holy Jim Falls.

By "Skiing" I assume you mean "Downhill Skiing" and not cross-country skiing or something silly like that. I therefore selected "Skiing" even though I snowboard. I feel the two sports to be close enough related. I, like many snowboarders, started out on two planks instead of one.
"Skiing" should be changed to "Skiing/Snowboarding" perhaps, Or is that why "Other" is so far ahead?
