in reply to On St. Valentine's Day I forgot...

where is the option: about St. Valentine's Day?

It's an american holiday Germany never had. Just when the florists found out about it, it became publicly known here. And I hate commercial holidays. So I refuse to do anything special on that day.

It's an italian tradition, see Saint Valentine Day Tradition; the commercial speculation is another story...

    Ciao, Valerio
Italian? Couldn't find a proof for that on the page you mentioned. Instead i found:

      > But the fame which San Valentine all over the world is due to the legend which originated in the anglo-saxon countries

So not necessarily America, but also (e.g.) England. But to my knowledge Italy is not anglo-saxon ;-)

What you say is true but doesn't contraddict his biography :) I was talking about history, you were talking about legends; you will find the whole story in the italian version of that page.

        Ciao, Valerio

I didn't say it's not an italian history. But the tradition was spread by anglo-saxon people. So it's their merit of making world-wide known. I'm not interested in the history, I just blame the commercial factor anglo-saxon gave to it.

Ah, busy improving the reputation of German men vis--vis romance, I see. ;)

Valentine's day is not an American holiday per se, but I'm sure Americans have influenced how it is celebrated in Germany.

Romance? What's that? Do I *have* to know that? Sounds italian to me. But then "vis--vis" sounds very french.

Do you know that you're confusing me!?

You keep using that word, I don't think it means what you think it means.

Strictly Speaking Feb 14 is the Catholic Church Feast day of St Valentine of Rome who was put in prison and died there for performing marrage rituals for solders in the Roman Legons (Against the order of the emperor who felt single men fought better).

It was promoted by the Catholic Church as a clean wholesome subsitute for the Veneralia, a Feast to Venus, which got quite kinky, Or was it the Roman fertility goddess Juno's Feast day, I beleive it is a debated topic.

I really have too much time on my hands

[usemodperl]: just answer my question without judging me or my technique, if that's possible around here anymore, sheesh
[Corion]: usemodperl: You should be well aware of the ways to make your approach still work, even if it is to set up your own proxy that strips HTTPS. It shouldn't be hard for somebody with your acumen.
[Corion]: Unless you just want to vent your frustration about how others don't provide for your whims. That's sometimes necessary. There, there.
[usemodperl]: so to answer my question, no http at cpan, and all rationalized too, thanks
[marto]: this 'safe space' thing you have going on seems just like wanting to whine without anyone replying
[Corion]: usemodperl: Naah, if you scroll back, you'll find several approaches that still work. Maybe a prewrapped solution like CPAN::Mini is what you want. Or maybe App::FatPacker. But you don't seem to want to listen. That's OK.
[Corion]: There, there. It'll all be better.
[marto]: usemodperl "so to answer my question, no http at cpan," doesn't tie up with what you said "I can find cpan mirrors on http"
[usemodperl]: yea but http only has tar.gz, i wanna download modules with core perl, but http seems to make it impossible, that's my only question, how to find http mirrors like meta, or how to do it with core perl, but options now seem totally broken (on purpose :-(
