Preview/New vs Submit(only)

by ddd (Acolyte)
on Sep 20, 2000 at 04:28 UTC ( #33225=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Composing this new posting I have two options: <preview> or <new>

Earlier today while composing a reply to an existing post I had only one option: <Submit>. At that time I was operating on a record small amount of sleep, and I hit submit - and was presented with a page of my post at top and an edit field below (prefilled with the source of my post).

Being a sleep-deprived fool I thought that I was looking a preview of the post, with the source below for editing
- so I hit submit (again).
(Yes I *did* miss the small change that the title now started with "RE:")

I realized what I had done at the same time that I started seeing /msg from monks in the Chatterbox :-(

My point(s) &/or opinion(s) related to this are:

  • Preview is a good idea.
It should be available both when posting new nodes, and when replying to existing nodes.
  • From a HCI point of view I think that the buttons should be named the same everywhere: 'Preview' and 'Submit' (not 'new')
  • After processing 'Submit' for a reply, a more logical result / destination page would be either:
    • back where you were when you clicked 'Offer your reply'
    • At the 'replied to' article with all replies threaded below (including yours)

It may have been a side effect of the lack of sleep (or just depending too much on the content of the 'Site How To' node), but it took a /msg from a another monk (thanks kudra) before I figured out:

  • that I could & how-to edit my accidental posts
  • to request the duplicates be deleted at Editor Requests

Perlmonks is a great site, keep up the good work!

Thanks for listening to my $0.02,
Think I'll go to bed now,

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

I actually would like the idea of just having a preview button initially. This way, you'd be forced to preview your writeup before you submit it.

It could help prevent badly formatted posts.

I already up-voted several items in this thread but I've decided that wasn't enough support.

These are the improvements that I've seen the most consistant support for yet. I'd like to restate them together:

      • Supply a "Preview" button when replying (and any other places that don't have them yet)
      • Rename the "New" button to "Submit" (or rename them both to something else but I like "Submit")
      • After submitting, display the parent node so that you can see that your reply now appears after it (and provide a user setting so that experienced monks can preserve the current behavior)
      • Provide only a "Preview" button for new root nodes to moderated sections unless the user has turned off this feature in their user preferences.

I'd also really like to see a debounce feature for nodes and chatter. For nodes I'd include an ID in a hidden field and detect multiple submissions with the same ID from the same user (including Anonymous Monk). When a duplicate is detected, I'd give the user the options of

      • Ignore this duplicate.
      • Replace previous posting.
      • Add another posting.
because I can see this happening in all three of those cases. For moderated root nodes, it might be best for a "replace" request to delete the original node if it has not already been approved nor replied to. If approved or replied to, just denying the replace request might be best.

For chatter duplicates, I'd just check for duplicate text from the same user. If a duplicate is submitted, just give the user a message like 'you tried to say "..." again' similar to when you /msg someone. You could add a trailing space if you really wanted to repeat yourself.

              - tye (but my friends call me "Tye")

      me too

Oh, wait. Me too posts are not allowed. Ah, ok, quick, come up with something original to add... :-)

Seriously, When I am posting a reply to a node, I often hit submit, and then in a separate window, bring up the original node again to see if my reply was actually submitted. I am never quite sure when things happen on this site. I can usually avoid double posting, but I sometimes get real paranoid about making sure that my posts actually appear.

Debouncing would be nice if this isn't implemented. If you post a reply that is letter for letter the same as the parent everything should bounce it.

just got confused the opposite way and thought I was staring at the screen following a "New" button when in fact I hadn't submitted yet. *poof* extremely mad at extremely.

Another thing is "New" almost seems like "Reset".

A less terrifying and more descriptive term would be "Post Message"
