I've found that asking them what you can do to be successful (provided they haven't immediately just mentioned exactly that), and maybe cite some experience on what's helped you be more successful in the past. Get a grip on their expectations, and they tend to start spilling more and more candidly about the environment and things you'll be working on.

horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
