As a side note, the lexicals  $label_index $label_name $label_value $label_description are scoped entirely within the for-loop of the OPed code and any values assigned to them vanish at the end of that loop. I assume you're saving these values into some structure in an enclosing scope, but if you're not, you can save your eyesight and fingertips by getting rid of them.

Also, your use of  @var and  $x in the (pseudo?) code suggests you're not using strict and warnings. If that's actually the case and not just an artifact of the example, use strict and warnings. :) The runnable example code of choroba and Lotus1 handle these variables "correctly" IMHO.

Use:  <p> text here (a paragraph) </p>
and:  <code> code here </code>
to format your post; it's "PerlMonks-approved HTML":

  • Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.
  • Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
    <code> <a> <b> <big> <blockquote> <br /> <dd> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <hr /> <i> <li> <nbsp> <ol> <p> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul>
  • Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
  • Want more info? How to link or or How to display code and escape characters are good places to start.
