Here is Abigail-styled golfed regex approach. It works for me with "8" as argument, but crashes with "5" :)
#!perl -l
sub f{/((.).*)(.)(??{$"x($2!=$3&length$1!=abs$2-$3)})/?0:/.{@ARGV}/?pr
+int:map&f,$_.1..$_."@ARGV"}f
P.S. Removing one char magically solves crashing:
-l sub f{/((.).*)(.)(??{$2!=$3&&length$1!=abs$2-$3&&0})/?0:/.{@ARGV}/?print:map&f,$_.1..$_."@ARGV"}f
Update on Sep 20: more golf
-l /.{@ARGV}/?print:map/((.).*)(.)(??{$2!=$3&&length$1!=abs$2-$3&&0})/||do$0,$_.1.."$_@ARGV"

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
