Agreed. About the existing forms, perhaps a user option to select a default displaytype from among "update" (what it looks like now, which would be the default for existing users), "regular" (no form, provides link to switch to update view, default for new users?), print, xml, edit (unlikely to be used as default) etc.
As you say, this stuff doesn't code itself; I hope just ideas are
at least minorly helpful anyway.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
