I've hit this before and I believe that the "argument list" size is made up of the argument list plus all of your environment. So if you have lots of stuff set (set and setenv calls) in environment variables then this can limit what you can have on the command line...

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
