I noticed something very similar to this in the release notes to Perl 5.6.1. You might want to grab that and see if it solves your problem or do more research into that bug and how it was fixed (as you could probably work around it).

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
