There may be a module that already implements this:
use warnings;
use Inline C => Config =>
BUILD_NOISY => 1;
use Inline C => <<'EOC';
SV* wotisit(SV * arg) {
if(SvPOK(arg)) return newSVpv("string", 0);
if(SvIOK(arg) || SvNOK(arg) || SvUOK(arg))
return newSVpv("number", 0);
return newSVpv("something else", 0);
}
EOC
use Math::BigInt; # for testing
my $o = Math::BigInt->new(0);
for('1', '1.1', 1, 1.1, $o) {
print wotisit($_), "\n";
}
Outputs:
string
string
number
number
something else

Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
