Quite a few of these aren't really onomatopes in any strict sense of the word, but almost all of the ones that don't fit into that category might reflect what some people call a "phonosemantic" aspect. (See Margaret Magnus' dissertation as well.) Magnus (borrowing from Humboldt) would say that words like whirl, rip, and hiccup are iconic, but not onomatopoeic. </pedantry> .
