Confessional, Revisited

by kvale (Monsignor)
on Apr 15, 2004 at 21:07 UTC ( #345548=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Confession can cleanse the soul and free a guilty heart. It has been almost two years since Return of the Confessional, the latest in a tradition started by chromatic in Confessional. With all the new monks, I think it's time for another. Feel free to post anonymously, if the pain of a public confession would be too great.

Forgive me, fellow monks, for I have sinned. This is my first public confessional and there is much to cleanse.

  • I have indiscriminately used all my remaining votes at the end of the day just to gain XP.
  • I have tossed off quick replies to questions to be one of the first, and then filled in a better reply later.
  • I have tossed off quick replies to questions to be one of the first, without properly checking my facts or testing my code.
  • I have edited nodes without saying I did so.
  • I have engaged in extended Re:^N arguments that did not add much new information.
  • I have withheld useful information from an OP because the node was 'stale' and not worth much XP.
  • I have made hit-and-run comments in the CB without taking time to engage in a real conversation.
  • I envy tilly and Ovid their excellent writing style.
  • I tend to read and favor nodes by monks I know well.
  • I have prematurely optimized code.
  • I have written useful modules, but have been too lazy to submit them to CPAN.
If there was something you did that was against the good spirit of Perlmonks or the Perl community, post here. We will understand.

    • I have a tendency to skim nodes and answer the wrong question.
    • I've not been keeping up with my Perlmonks the way I should :)
    • I've had innappropriate thoughts (but it ain't none of your darned business what they are).
    • I still should have taken the blue pill.

Great post, but oh, do I feel guilty now. Maybe this will help:

    • I have posted questions because I was too lazy to spend 2 hours Googling because I know 20 monks will try to beat each other to answer it in under 5 minutes from clicking "create"
    • I won't admit that if I spend enough time working on a question before posting, it I might answer it and actually learn something
    • I opt for the former because I know I might gain at least 1 or 2 XP
    • I don't understand 90% of the questions on SoWP, but I'm still an abbott
    • I wish certain monks had pictures of themselves on their personal nodes, but then I'd have to have one

    I have posted Anonymously. >:)

I have voted (or abstained from voting) differently on Anonymous Monk's nodes than I would have if the monk were logged in.

I envy tilly and Ovid their excellent writing style.

What?? Is that bad? I thought everybody did that. =]

Here's my list (which is probably too short, really):

    • I have turned away from some SoPW nodes when the OP looked really clueless, just for that reason.
    • I don't ever put "use warnings" in my scripts (I just do "perl -cw" once after every edit).
    • When a CPAN module doesn't install because of test failures, I either "force install" it or give up and try to get along without the module, rather than tracking down the test failure and reporting it when necessary.
    • Sometimes I check the Saints in our Book list just to see if my ranking has changed.

Do I feel better now? I'm not sure...

    • I have frequently reloaded the Newest Nodes in hopes of seeing an un-answered question I could answer
    • I have cursed when a reload of Newest Nodes brought a whole bunch of new nodes - and they were all already answered.

      Competently. (%^&^%$%*@#!!)

I have yet to start reorganizing my home node. Despite my meaning to do so for many months.

Forgive me, fellow monks, for I have sinned.

    • Like the Red Queen, I have spent too much time running in place just to stay abreast of maintaining the web sites I maintain.
    • I have not explored uncharted territories of Perl and Linux as I promised I would.
    • I have not writen that great Content Management System as I planned.
    • I have half-heartedly reviewed a few CMS packages but haven't done anything more about it.
    • I haven't cleaned out my web hosting account and now it's way over quota.
    • The Great Calendar Project that I Nearly Finished a couple of times is still Sadly Unfinished.

But thanks for asking!! Now you've given me a great ToDo list for the next three months!

    Alex / talexb / Toronto

    Life is short: get busy!

    • I visited the node that must not be named.
    • I just finished posting a link to said node, knowing that several people will most likely visit it. Perhaps the slashdot effect will occur with it as well, in which case the whole event would be that much worse! :-|
    • I just link to it again! And again. Oh my. I will be repenting for years to come for that linking... :)

    • I have been away from the monastery too, too long.
    • I have berated myself into not answering questions for fear that I'm wrong, because of my faulty memory.
    • I have not taken the time to delve into the archives of the monastery in penance for these sins.

    You are what you think.

    • I have taken the name Wall in vain.
    • I have not kept up with Perl as I should.
    • I am looking forward to a Java project at work. (As bad as that is, understand that a lot of what I do involves old, schtanky shell and ProC code.)
    • I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.
    • I make pop culture references to seem far cooler than I really am.
    • I have made multiple votes for the gaudy XP benefits .. but then I used to live in Chicago, so voting early and often is a habit.
    • I recently re-wrote an awk script instead of translating it to Perl.
    • I have, within the last month, used sed.

    • My sig file shamelessly pretends to be part of the Perlmonks chrome
    • I have used PHP.
    • I have a large piece of commercial Perl software, the code of which is... ah... sub-optimal
    • I have doubts about Perl 6

I have said bad things about Java.

No wait, that is a virtue, carry on...

I do need to work on being happier and more agreeable, as my general happy sarcasm is oft misinterpreted on these boards, as is often the case when vocal inflections are lost.

The major thing is, I guess, I never lifted my major game development project off the ground, being more content to bike, watch TV, and do non computer things after work. I promise though, someday, and someday soon, it will be 25% complete :)

I've done almost the same sins as you've listed. Especially I tried to answer sopw posts fast.

Update: yes, I do post some replies just for xp too, for example Re: Ensuring forward compatibility is just a post against perl6 in such a way that those not liking perl6 much will upvote it, but those who like it wouldn't all downvote it.

    I beg forgiveness:
    • I have used Java.
    • I have *liked* using Java.
    • I continue to use Java.
    • I have attempted to make Java and Perl communicate
      • On another note, however, Perl had dominance in the commmunication.
    • I too have doubts about Perl6
    • I have been writing in perl for 4 years, and I have never finished a project.
    • I have had many good ideas for modules, but never executed any of them.
    • My PerlMonks rank is far higher than my true skill.
    • I jump on what few new nodes I can answer, but frequently without any direct solution to the problem.
    • I have used Win32::GUI instead of Tk
    • I have premeturely optimized code.
    • I have reinvented the wheel... enough to open a tire store.
    • I have written my own HTTP param parser instead of using CGI.
    • I have neglected to thank those who have helped me solve my problems.
    • I have ignored good advice because I was certain I knew better.
    • I have posted this list against my better judgement.
    • I have used the 'compile' method to hide my code.
Request: Please do not vote this if you can resist the temptation.

My code doesn't have bugs, it just develops random features.

      • A scheduled task opens up my browser every day at the same time. 1)at the chace of getting XP by logging in, and 2)So I don't forget that PM is here.
      • I'm posting as AM so my post/XP ratio doesn't go any lower.
