Point 1 : thanks to newlines, that is the definition of a paragraph.

Point 2 : In fact I don't really care : what I'd like is to be able to read more good formated posts. Be it an option or not is not the most important point.

To be clean, I'd tend to agree with you : the poster could choose if he wants to write in HTML or not.

    I really don't think this will prompt anyone to be better at formatting text. On websites where linebreaks are added automatically, I've tended to see people posting great big unbroken blocks of text on a regular basis. I don't see that much here. I don't know if it's blind chance that the tendencies match up like that, but I'd rather not take a chance on suddenly having to sort through undifferentiated blocks of text.
