Sure, it's easy to build applications like gmail!
  1. Start a search engine that becomes the de facto standard
  2. Float an IPO to gain billions of dollars
  3. Hire dozens of the most brilliant programmers you can find
  4. Tell them "Write an application like gmail"

:-P

    You forgot:

    0. Build a database capable of tracking all movement users make on the web. Use cookies that last till 2038. Attach them to anything. Get everyone to use your cookie-tracked applications. This database will be your greatest asset.
