Solitaire was the benchmark of the early 90s. Play a game and measure the time the cards need to fall down.

Sometimes I find it fun to play with real cards instead of the computer. It is a time killer, and it takes more time with real cards. Also, you can cheat if you want to.

    Aside:
    My grandpa taught me this:

Never travel in the woods without a deck of cards.

    Why? you might ask.

Because, if you get lost, all you have to do is to start playing solitaire, and inevitably somebody, somebody, will come along and tell you what your next move should be.

Now you are no longer lost in the woods.

Now you are no longer lost in the woods.

Now you are no longer lost in the woods alone.

Then you can play Texas Hold'em and thousands will gather.....

Ahh, Solitaire. That wonderful game where no-one can seemingly decide on the rules (one card draw? 3-card draw? can cards come back from the piles at the top without it being cheating?) .. :)

I have to admit, I've never seen the point in it, except for filling those bored moments between projects ...

Losing most of the time and accepting it gracefully is good real-world training.

I find that it's useful for getting my mind off a sticky problem, allowing the problem to work subconsciously. Often after a bout of solitaire, the answer will be waiting for me.
Re: I've played solitaire with physical cards within the last: (mindless and hopeless)

Typical solitaire is both mindless and you mostly "lose", which is a horrid combination. Spider solitaire is a good mental challenge and you usually can win if you can just figure out how. But I don't play it with real cards because my Perl version makes backtracking easy and I hate not being able to backtrack in solitaire. Freecell is only a moderate challenge but you can almost always win there. But I haven't played any solitaire in months, though I often do puzzles when trying to get to sleep, which is similar.

      tye,
Freecell is only a moderate challenge but you can almost always win there.

Having been interested in this in the past, I did a bit of research. Comments here indicate that there is only 1 game in the 32K on Windows that is unsolveable though you can get 2 more using an easter egg. Unfortunately, this proof doesn't list the total number of impossible games.

As for using puzzles to get to sleep - I am very envious.

        Limbic~Region,

There is another easter egg in Freecell that will let you win any of the games, unwinnable or not. Not much satisfaction winning this way, but your stats look great.

BTW, a good puzzle tends to keep me up too - not lull me to sleep.

As for using puzzles to get to sleep - I am very envious.

I find that the soporific power of a puzzle increases if I attempt to solve it in my head, in the dark... Lewis Carroll wrote a book around this idea.

I used to play solitaire when I was working at the office: too much spare time!

Then I found Chip's Challenge and forgot about solitaire for ever (it was great even though I couldn't ever finish it)...

since this, I have been playing sudoku, pencilwise, in those sleepless times...

I had never heard of the puzzles before that.

    Solitaire or Solitaire?

Actually remmeber having a row with my mother over the rules of solitaire when I was about 15 . We didn't speak for days. See died recently and knowing her I bet she still thought that her cheat didn't shorten her odds considerable.

Probably destined to be a programmer even then.

    Who plays solitaire anyway!?

    (Now where's that minesweeper...?)

Lonely people, with a deck of cards and not much else.

Not since I ditched Windows 3.11 have I played this game on computer.
With cards that last time would have been in 1998, 3 card draw.

I played solitaire a number of times, over the course of a few weeks, when I was in about fifth grade. Then I realized it was boring, so I quit. Eight or nine years later, when I first saw a computer version (on Win3.1, as it happens), I played that a small handful of times, until I realized it wasn't any less boring. That was in the mid '90s, so it was over a decade ago now. Wow, now I feel old. How do simple things like polls about stupid card games manage that effect?
Me too. I have since found that multiplayer games are not boring. Spend all of my spare time at eyeplaygames.com now.

I *had* to use physical cards, because I was on vacation in Puerto Vallarta and my dearest, she who must be obeyed, forbade the bringing of computers on the trip.

To be fair, I didn't fight too much, because I dreaded the thought of my laptop being stolen, or taking hours in customs to bring it through.

Plus, in the floppy drive is one of those places you *don't* want sand! ;-)

...within the last Century - on a postal services steam boat in northern Norway. Usually with an audience watching or commenting "oh, why would you do that?" and the like.

My last job was working in a call centre during the evenings. Quite often, you'd have periods where calls came in 20-25 minutes apart, so you had to find things to do. Many people started crocheting, knitting, reading books, etc. I was part of the crowd that started crocheting and I brought a physical deck of cards to play solitaire, as the computer versions were blocked out and could not play online versions due to the company firewall. sigh.

I'm using Solitaire (Klondike and variations) to teach my son (at 5) sequences and rules and the impact of rule changes. He likes the computer better (PySol on FreeBSD rocks!), but patience is not one of his virtues yet, so out come the cards.

Well given the choice between a standard deck of cards and a computer for solitaire. I will always choose the deck. There is something relaxing about shuffling a deck of cards and dealing. It becomes a mechanical operation that you can totally zone out while doing. Besides if I am going to play a low tech game on my computer it is gonna be minesweeper.

Good idea! The next poll topic should be "I've played minesweeper with active landmines within the last . . . ."
