perhaps is it time to forget the loooong antiquated RH9. You'll have much less trouble with an up-to-date system (and less security holes, too). If you want the true RedHat thing without the price, you may wish to try Fedora Core, WhiteBox Linux or Tao Linux, among a few others.

Hey I still use RH9 as my primary desktop. There is no need to get on this upgrade treadmill. Heck most webhosts I know still use RH 6.2 or 7.1. You can't beat RH9 for usablity and stability. It was the last RH versions that still had a Linux feel while having a GUI for everything.

All of RH's newer versions are GUI only and the changes they've made with Fedora Core, you can get under the hood but you can't do anything. They've completely wrecked the /dev directory and they don't use /mnt any more (I haven't figured out yet where they mount the CD-ROM or any of the USB drives. They've also crippled a number of software packages like xmms.

The only problem I've had with RH9 was when I needed to upgrade to Gimp2. That reqruired me to muck around with GTK+ glib and other stuff. Put everything in a different directory and it all works. I've kept up with all the security updates too without any problems.

Back to the other distros. Fedora Core really just alpha testing for RH. At work we've bought RHEL which is much much better than any FC release. Witebox seems to be falling behind in updates. CentOS is considered the best RH clone, but it is now being targed by RH and having to beg for donations. It won't be long before they're taken out by RH's lawyers.

As for the OP, Don't use the CPAN module. Download the tarball from cpan.org and Install from that. It will be clear what is missing when you do it that way. If you can't figure it out please post the exact error messages you get.

I've used RH as my primary OS from 6.2 to 9.0, then I tried Debian, now Slackware rules. Slackware is just plain great as a geek desktop :)
Using something like RH 6.2 or 7.1 as a webhost is simply crazy. You're almost certain to be hacked badly someday with such ancient stuff. Sure it's still usable (after all win98 is still usable too) but what about security update? They've disappeared for years...
However upgrading perl would almost certainly be a good start.. 5.8.0 is quite brittle.

Maybe updates you pay to get from RH have, but I never used those anyway. Keep track of what software is on your machines and patch them when a security bug is found. Really it isn't that hard.
