in reply to RFC: BioInformatics tutorial?

Another Perl bioinformatics tutorial wouldn't be a bad thing if it was well written. The problem I have with the BioPerl tutorial is that it appears to have been written for computer programmers and I aint no programmer.

I really want to understand the programming aspect of bioinformatics so I can do my job better, but my many years of existence have been spent on understanding the finer points of biology.

Of course the biggest problem with bioinformatics is that it is a moving target, a rapidly moving target. After starting with simple text matching and text manipulations the field is evolving to use differential equations, time sequences, networks, linguistics, matrix algebra, graphs, artificial intelligence, genetic algorithms, electronic circuit theory, communication theory, ...

If you choose to accept this mission -- good luck.
