For the most part, that's what goes on. I know that when demerphq (or other pmdev) work on things like XML tickers, they usually add functionality that can be accessed via URL options, rather than changing existing functionality. ...usually.

And the basic layout of the site hasn't changed much either. Sure, you can do a lot more with CSS now than a year or so ago here, but it's not necessary for users to do anything to keep their view of the Monastery just about the same.

I tend to work pretty hard to preserve the illusion of continuity from the users point of view. However its not always possible to do this. Sometimes preserving continuity comes at the cost of performance and system stability. And when that happens I have no regrets about breaking things.

For instance some of our tickers were designed long before we had so many users and so many posts and just in general so much going on. Some of them had no restrictions on the size of the data set they returned, etc. So as the site grew they werent able to scale up. So they have to be changed.

Other non-backwards compatible changes involve things like making the tickers more consistant. Which while it does occasionally involve breakage, I believe that it is in the long term benefit of the site.
