Namespace: Samba::LDAP ?

Dear Master Monks,

I am just about to start work converting smbldap-tools to go on the CPAN, as we want to reuse the code in some of our projects.

Where's best to discuss namespace, here or on a list?

Right here is probably one good idea. Also the PAUSE FAQ Suggests posting to the news group comp.lang.perl.modules, or the mailing list [e-mail] to discuss "registering your name space"

I sort of wonder why you want to do this. I use these tools too, and I've never been particularly bothered that they are not on hosted on CPAN.

I suppose you've already done so, but it would be polite to let Idealx know of your plans. My main concern is that this could lead to a code fork. Have you had difficulty in getting patches accepted?

That issue aside, I would strongly recommend [e-mail] as the best place for advice on module naming issues. It's low-volume and always interesting.

I want to do this as I am halfway through writing an application called "SOSA - Samba and Open-xchange Simple Administrator" using Catalyst and I don't want to have to rely on the command line tools being installed, so I want to CPAN-ize them and have the modules installable from there.

I have contacted Jerome from Idealx and John from Samba, whom I both know already. I am still waiting for a reply from Jerome, and so won't move forward until we have had a chat.

I am also concerned about a code fork, but it might not happen anyway.

I'll post to the list just now though.

Putting something on CPAN gets it tested by CPAN Testers, rated by all sorts of other people, findable by people using CPAN Search, reportable to CPAN RT, and so on. All of those things work together to improve modules and module quality. You should care that things are on CPAN. :)

This is not entirely related to your request, but knowing that you don't want to use the command line tools really made me interested about your project.

Do you have any intention to release an API that uses the DCE/RPC commands that are available in the Active Perl Win32::NetAdmin module? I'm very interested about that but I lack the knowlegde to create the necessary glue using XS and the C libraries from Samba team (libmsrpc.h).

I'm asking that because I'm not using Samba with LDAP support, but still using the smbpasswd (and in the future the tdbsam). Nowadays I'm suffering from having to edit the smbpasswd mannually, since Samba doesn't honor the lock created by my Perl application (see flock()). Using DCE/RPC would solve this but I'm not running the application from a Windows box (actually is a Linux one).

Now related to your question... I don't think so I'm the correct person to tell about that but I think using CPAN features (and probably manually creating a mailing list) is a better option. You could use a Sourceforge's account for the project too.

No my intent is to turn the command line tools into OO code to go on the CPAN and then in my application using Catalyst. And yes, it will also go on sf.
