Why does it happen that on some screens, I can see myself in the list of Other Users list below Chatterbox, and on others, can't ?

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

My theory is that the list of Other Users lists users who were active in the last five minutes. If you go away for five minutes (or take five minutes to compose a new node), then load a page, you will not be in the list of Other Users, because you weren't active during the preceeding five minutes. When you load another page you will be in the list, because of your first request.

It is "worse" than that. The "Other Users" list is updated every three (I think) minutes. It can't be updated when you stop visiting, as there is no way to tell when that happens. It could be updated immediately if you visit and aren't already in the list, but it isn't. So you can visit the site repeatedly for a couple of minutes and still not appear in the "Other Users" list. But then, even if you never visit again, you'll be in the "Other Users" list for about three minutes soon after that.
