Actually the tab key I use all the time - generally it translates to "indent this line the appropriate amount". The tab character should be bannished as you suggest, except perhaps as a separator in csv files.

    Agree. I need the tab key to type two or more spaces (depending on things I edit, perl gets 4, ordinary text gets 2, html gets 1) by one stroke. Well, at least in vim. It also allows me, at the same time, to enter insert mode from normal mode. Yes, I could remap, but I use the key for nothing else. Oh, I'm used to cycle those windows with Alt-Tab. It's really nice to have this in X.
