in thread Tabs vs Spaces lets give this a go

perhaps i was unclear; i did not mean to suggest anything about terminal widths (i usually use 130), only about visual alignment with respect to voluntary hard-wraps, such as tabular ternaries and the like.

personally i think column/character position is a rather useless feature of code searches, but even so, i would expect it to report one character per character aka the column number, which is what i get and expect with spaces.

i'll go back to encouraging tabs only when we our editors support smart tabs that work for arbitrary and automatic spacial alignment (not just indent level), with proprtional fonts as a bonus.
