I tried it with 'w:', 'w:\' and 'w:/'. In all three cases, it says it's not a directory.

    Are you quite sure that windows agrees that the drive designator is a directory?
      I tried these:
      C:\> perl -e "print 1 if (-d \"w:\")" C:\> perl -e "print 1 if (-R \"w:\")"
      and both printed 1.
