The biggest problem I have with syntax highlighting is the garish colours the average geek will come up with. They don't call it angry fruit salad for nothing. I find it interrupts my train of thought. I find meta-editing features like block collapsing much more useful (hmm, and I don't even use that very much).

I have a sysadmin who has run around and added stupid config settings to all the servers at work, and even shell scripts get the treatment. It's nearly as ugly as SQL done in all caps.
