First, read How do I create a Poll?. Then suggest your poll here. Good idea to start a new quest, because the old one was decidedly overgrown, but how 'bout including a direct link to it anyway? Complete ideas are more likely to be used. Well, it's not complete due to me not being very expert in this area, but I expect knowledgeable people to give helpful contributions... Since I misunderstood the last poll myself and others mentioned other famous doctors from various tv series or movies, how about another poll with a title, as a pun, identical to the former one, or perhaps with a lowercase "d", as follows? Really, I was mainly thinking of doctors from tv series in the beginning, but eventually the poll suggestion is being broadened to generic fictional doctors and beyond. Adding your own suggestions, of course.	[reply]

I personally believe that I would: Rebuild Perl from scratch and name it Perl But I also PB I would do so in a poorer way than $Larry did in the first place. Babylon 5 (cosmology) - Dr. Stephen Franklin and Dr. Sarah Chambers. Do you really mean cosmology? Anyway I found Dr. Stephen Franklin in Wikipedia, but not Dr. Sarah Chambers. So I'm adding the former. seaQuest - Dr. Kristin Westphalen, Dr.Wendy Smith, and Dr. Perry. Of these, the first seems to be the "most important" one, and I would add her to the list. What do you think about it? ER: (The following appeared in at least 6 episodes.) Oh no! I know in advance there would be far too many of them from that series. Just name the one which in your seemingly far from being humble opinion is the one there. Want more? Not sure, this poll proposal, which initially seemed interesting is now slowly turning somewhat into a nightmare and I find it unlikely to be accepted anyway. I remember the hit perfectly well, I was a teenager back then after all. I was thinking of (little more than) fictional charachters though and I fear that adding real-life "doctors" would lenghten the list too much. Or make for a completely different poll.	[reply]

Hmm, Dr. Doom would be a nice add. As would be Dr. Strange, Dr. Don Blake (alter ego of Thor), (and not to leave the DC characters out) Dr. Light. Thanks to XP champion Cop, I found out a thread started back in 2001 by japhy which is actually in the form of a poll but seems to have never made its way to polls. I'm reposting it here with additions from the various replies given in the original thread, some cosmetic interventions and a pair of suggestions of my own. Perl Programmers Don't Die... they get `DESTROY`ed their refcount drops to 0 they get collected they just refer to something else they just warn if they're in an eval they `croak` they form a circular self-reference and so continue to exist forever, but become inaccessible they shutdown they are exported if they are blessed if they are damned they reset `$self` they go out of scope they get undefined they just leave the symbol table they get dumped and hope someone remembers the reverse they accidentally get stringified and can't be restored they're obfuscated and B::Deparse can't handle it someone enables strict and they have to adapt or leave they're locals and you move away they're deprecated for the next release they just fade to Python they just hibernate waiting for Perl 6	[reply] [d/l] [select]

I did my due diligance, and found What do you call yourself? from June of 2004. It was a thread, not a poll, slightly different in orientation (it was about what you are called by others; I'm curious what you call yourself), and a fair amount of time has passed: What do you consider yourself? The recent economic turmoil has me... not worried at all. I work for the government, I'd have to kill somebody to get fired. not worried much. I'm an expert in my field and I should always have work. not caring at all. I'm already unemployed. a little worried. I noticed recently that my company switched to one-ply paper in all the restrooms. worried. HR sent around a form asking all employees for an update on our "company relevant skill sets". panicked. But in some traits it is more of a western nature. I researched this answer a bit, and found out that (according to the online J/E dictionary I use) Perl in Japanese is Paari (パール). Thank you for your research, which I certainly value much and will save for future reference, but it is my understanding that 道 and 術 are kanji while the transliteration of "perl" is probably katakana, and I don't have the slightest idea if one can mix them freely like you do. Not saying that you can't, I just don't know! Hopefully someone with a better Japanese knowledge will shed some light on this. Incidentally not too much time ago I heard that $Larry is also studying it. Update: liverpole informs me that it's fine to mix katakana with kanji. So, we have some new areas to add to perlmonks Haha, adding new areas, no seriously: haha! Like it or not, this is the most common source of downvotes in PMDs. While I hate that this is the case a priori... on a really serious basis, I would also not add such areas. For Perl-jutsu and Perl-do should permeate quite about everything anyway. When you tell someone how to do some particular thing in answer to a SoPW, you're teaching a little (or not so little) piece of Perl-jutsu. With passing many pieces of Perl-jutsu, and slowly showing how to shape a Perl program in a perlish way, the teaching of elements of Perl-do also takes place. In fact the latter is not really something that can be taught in the strictest sense, it is probably more true that it is something one gains conscience of in the long run, day by day. パール道 (Perl-do): The Philosophy of Perl I think that as with some other Japanese words, "philosophy" is an inaccurate translation of the real meaning of "do"... Well, if you're thinking of changing the code, I'd think it would be a better solution to add a way to show some extra text between the title and the options (in the nodelet, the normal poll view, and the vote displaytype). Without changing code, you could rewrite the poll title so some of the answers start with "he is" with "he" linking to the post or something. That would bring up gender-neutral pronouns flame in the poll thread so maybe it's better to link "lied" and "told the truth" etc or even say "lied in that thread" and link the "that thread".	[reply]

I suppressed my laughter while, for twenty minutes, they sat down and did their best to act like they were doing exectly what they wanted to do, even though they couldn't log in. Miracle Worker - "But it read a file from it yesterday!" 'Sir, at a guess, this disk has been swollowed and regurgitated.' "But I did that a month ago, and it read a file from it yesterday!" Advantages: Apparently has remarkable luck when you aren't around. Disadvantages: People complain when scons actually use the word 'horse-puckey'. Real Case: At least three users have claimed that they've loaded IBM WordPerfect from Macintosh disks. Taskmaster - "Well, this is a file in MacWrite. Do you know how I can upload it to MUSIC, transfer it over to UNIX from there, download it onto an IBM, convert it to WordPerfect, and put it in three-column format?" Advantages: Bold new challanges. Disadvantages: Makes one wish to be a garbage collector. Symptoms: An inability to keep quiet. Strong tendancies to make machines do things they don't want to do. Real Case: One user tried to get a scon to find out what another person's E-mail address was even though the user didn't know his target's home system, account name, or real name. How frequently do you `use Parse::RecDescent` and how does it has afected your miserable poor life? I'm Damian Conway, nor miserable nor poor module's author. Every day it makes me a Nietzschean super human. Each time I send to ACL a new HLT paper. It makes me the miserable author of may own papers. I've never used such module, what does it do? The whole Pirates Vs. There weren't too many good suggestions for “cleaning agent” (there's “solution”), and I'm not really satisfied with that phrase. However, there were more possibilities instead of “soap”: qw“detergent bleach ammonia surfactant”, “pine cleaner”. I tried to defend the statement that the dictionary definition for “soap” is clear enough in that it includes only produces whose main element is an organic substance made from fat and alkali, whereas you usually mop with a product whose main ingredient is hydrogen chloride. We decided this was false, “soap” includes both kind of substances in informal speech. Indeed, most people don't even know the difference, which is why there are home accidents from mixing bleach made of hydrogen chloride with basic chemicals, when a chemical reaction causes poisonous chlorine gas to be released (don't try this at home).
