I cannot BELIEVE that Dr. Strangelove was omitted. As well as Dr. Phibes.

      Oh, you said BEST.

and Dr Finlay... well he was the best in the 1970s on british tv, mayb thats why hes not in this list ;+P

Really, I was mainly thinking of doctors from tv series in the beginning, but eventually the poll suggestion is being broadened to generic fictional doctors and beyond. Adding your own suggestions, of course.

Should Perl become outlawed, what would you do (after the circumstancial denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance)?
      • (any type of) Assembly
      • Basic
      • C
      • C++
      • C#
      • Cobol
      • Fortran
      • Java
      • Lisp
      • PHP
      • Pyton
      • Ruby
      • Shell
      • VHDL
      • Visual Basic
      • write that book you always wanted to write
      • participate in anything GPL/BSD/MIT-licensed
      • build a log cabin and live in the woods ever-after
      • Rebuild Perl from scratch and name it otherwise
I personally.. well, I don't think it counts as "(any type of) Assembly", so I'd insert FORTH after that choice.

        --shmem

        _($_=" "x(1<<5)."?\n".q·/)Oo. G°\ /
                                      /\_¯/(q /
        ----------------------------  \__(m.====·.(_("always off the crowd"))."·
        ");sub _{s./.($e="'Itrs `mnsgdq Gdbj O`qkdq")=~y/"-y/#-z/;$e.e && print}

I personally believe that I would:

        • Rebuild Perl from scratch and name it Perl

But I also PB I would do so in a poorer way than $Larry did in the first place.

Why is this in answer to my own -completely unrelated- suggestion, anyway?

      Here's a few more :-

      • Dr Quincy
      • Dr Kildare
      • Dr Mark Sloan

Can't think of any others at the moment.

I know we're all a little nerdy here, but I can't believe no one has mentioned Dr. Ruth!

Doctor Who is the name of the series, The Doctor is the name of the character.

There are two fictional characters (there could be more) called "The Doctor" the one on Doctor Who and the one on Star Trek: Voyager.

Babylon 5 (cosmology) - Dr. Stephen Franklin and Dr. Sarah Chambers.

seaQuest - Dr. Kristin Westphalen, Dr.Wendy Smith, and Dr. Perry.

ER: (The following appeared in at least 6 episodes.)

      • Dr. Jessica Albright
      • Dr. Donald Anspaugh
      • Dr. Alexander Babcock

      • Dr. John Carter
      • Dr. Jing-Mei Chen
      • Dr. Victor Clemente
      • Dr. Janet Coburn
      • Dr. Elizabeth Corday
      • Dr. Nick Cooper

      • Dr. Maggie Doyle
      • Dr. Lucien Dubenko
      • Dr. Dale Edson

      • Dr. Dennis Gant
      • Dr. Tony Gates
      • Dr. Paul Grady
      • Dr. Mark Greene

      • Dr. John Taglieri
      • Dr. Upton
      • Dr. Carl Vucelich
      • Dr. Kerry Weaver
      • Dr. Ellis West

      Want more?

      Lady Aleena

"An it harm none, do as ye will."

Babylon 5 (cosmology) - Dr. Stephen Franklin and Dr. Sarah Chambers.

Do you really mean cosmology? Anyway I found Dr. Stephen Franklin in Wikipedia, but not Dr. Sarah Chambers. So I'm adding the former.

seaQuest - Dr. Kristin Westphalen, Dr.Wendy Smith, and Dr. Perry.

Of these, the first seems to be the "most important" one, and I would add her to the list. What do you think about it?

ER: (The following appeared in at least 6 episodes.)

Oh no! I know in advance there would be far too many of them from that series. Just name the one which in your seemingly far from being humble opinion is the one there.

        Want more?

Not sure, this poll proposal, which initially seemed interesting is now slowly turning somewhat into a nightmare and I find it unlikely to be accepted anyway. Perhaps I should have better stated the scope of "Dr." charachters to be listed as options...

      DR Congo? :p
      Dr. Stephen Colbert
Dr. Alban - a dentist who had a big hit with "It's my life"
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Alban

It's from 1992, and I still can't get that song out of my head.

I remember the hit perfectly well, I was a teenager back then after all. I was thinking of (little more than) fictional charachters though and I fear that adding real-life "doctors" would lenghten the list too much. Or make for a completely different poll.

Hmm, Dr. Doom would be a nice add. As would be Dr. Strange, Dr. Don Blake (alter ego of Thor), (and not to leave the DC characters out) Dr. Light. (These are all comic book characters in the US, so probably not the best choices...)

Update: How could I have forgotten Dr. Frank N. Furter! Man.

      tubaandy Ph.D. (no, really)

How did we manage to overlook Dr. Demento?

Or am I the only one here over 35 with a warped sense of humor?

      Dr. Detroit
      Dr. Dre(N.W.A)
      Dr. Dre(Yo! MTV Raps)
      Dr. Funkenstein
I am looking for Dr. John H. Watson

Verrrrrrry nice. Underappreciated tweet. Post. I meant post.

Thanks for digging that out, I was very childish back then°.

But I'd certainly love to hear more suggestions and musical references...

The style of my comments is best described as:
    • sparse, accurate, and clear
    • harder to read than the code itself
    • irrelevant by the time the code itself is complete
    • entirely implemented in POD
    • formatted to meet someone else's pathetic standard
    • HTML-links to the detailed design
    • unnecessary, because my code is so easy to read
    • undesirable, because I don't want you reading my code

ASCII art of the state machine or some other UML diagram.

      - tye

      • deliberately misleading
      • inexistent (style or comments?)

    When I curse / pray, I invoke
    • the nameless Master of the Universe
    • a conventional, historical religious figure (Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha)
    • a conventional, historical non-religious figure (Groucho Marx, Charles Babbage, Raquel Welch)
    • simple, classic scatology
    • the Flying Spaghetti Monster
    • Aule, creator of Dwarves, patron of Programmers
    • Chthulu
    • Great Caeser's Ghost
    • Shazam
    • Larry Wall
    • I don't; cursing / praying is for the weak
    • Other
Revised to include Aule, as per ambrus.

I ask for the blessings of Aulë, the lord of all earthly matter, master in all sciences and crafts, and personification of the programmer's virtues: wanting to automate things instead of doing them by hand, impatience, and pride of creating and owning something unique.

        A fellow Dwarf! I knew I wasn't alone!

Do I have your permission to add him to the list?

Thanks to XP champion Cop, I found out a thread started back in 2001 by japhy which is actually in the form of a poll but seems to have never made its way to polls. I'm reposting it here with additions from the various replies given in the original thread, some cosmetic interventions and a pair of suggestions of my own.

    Perl Programmers Don't Die...

    • they get DESTROYed
    • their refcount drops to 0
    • they get collected
    • they just refer to something else
    • they just warn
    • if they're in an eval
    • they croak
    • they form a circular self-reference and so continue to exist forever, but become inaccessible
    • they shutdown
    • they are exported
    • if they are blessed
    • if they are damned
    • they reset $self
    • they go out of scope
    • they get undefined
    • they just leave the symbol table
    • they get dumped and hope someone remembers the reverse
    • they accidentally get stringified and can't be restored
    • they're obfuscated and B::Deparse can't handle it
    • someone enables strict and they have to adapt or leave
    • they're locals and you move away
    • they're deprecated for the next release
    • they just fade to Python
    • they just hibernate waiting for Perl 6

Hilarious. This one makes it so hard to pick one. Several apply. I miss some bitrot variant, or reincarnation after perltidy.

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn
        Hilarious

Indeed. I was particularly amused by the last option ... no-one could possibly hibernate for that length of time.

        Cheers,

I did my due diligance, and found What do you call yourself? from June of 2004. It was a thread, not a poll, slightly different in orientation (it was about what you are called by others; I'm curious what you call yourself), and a fair amount of time has passed:

    What do you consider yourself?

    • Software Engineer / Hardware Engineer Firmware Engineer
    • Web Designer
    • Programmer
    • Developer
    • Communications Tech
    • Student / Teacher
    • Technical Support / Speaker to Users
    • Technical Lead / Project Manager
    • Architect
    • DBA
    • SysAdmin
    • Consultant
    • Systems Analyst
    • Security Specialist
    • Manager
    • Data Miner
    • Jack of All Trades
    • God
    • All of the above
    • Most of the above
    • Some of the above
    • None of the above
    Revised Included cbu suggestions.
      • All of the above
      • Most of the above
      • Some of the above
      • None of the above

The last option definitely should be a valid option in the Dutch political voting system. It is not yet.

Theory of computation (Turing machines, automata, computational complexity, algorithms, NP completeness, big-O) is ...
    • The crowning achievement of humankind
    • Awesome; the PCP theorem makes me weak in the knees
    • Pretty cool; I've even applied some of those things in practice
    • Interesting, but hard to understand
    • Something I've always wanted to learn more about, but never have the time
    • Something I don't think I'll ever really understand
    • Irrelevant for me; Never used it, never will
    • In theory the same as practice, but in practice it's not*
    • Something I barely survived in school and never want to think about again
    • Best left to someone other than me
    • A necessary evil in computer science
    • A tactic employed by CS departments to make their students miserable
    • A bunch of useless, self-important, academic jibberish
    • Too impenetrable and abstract to even make up my mind

You find that you are the only one left in your department on the week between the Holidays. Do you:
    • Use the time to catch up on work
    • Use the time to bone up on perl
    • Use the time to goof off on perlmonks
    • Eat a lot of pastries
    • All of the above
    • Time? What time? I have work to do!
    • Invent some work to justify yourself (consultant)
    • Clean everything in sight
    • Play nerf football with the network guys in the hall
    • Craft cunning booby-traps for your missing coworkers
    • Finally get around to writing that killer module you've always wanted to
    • Zzzzzzzz....

The recent economic turmoil has me...
    • not worried at all. I work for the government, I'd have to kill somebody to get fired.
    • not worried much. I'm an expert in my field and I should always have work.
    • not caring at all. I'm already unemployed.
    • a little worried. I noticed recently that my company switched to one-ply paper in all the restrooms.
    • worried. HR sent around a form asking all employees for an update on our "company relevant skill sets".
    • panicked. I write financial services software.
    • searching for a good Masters program. It'll all blow over in a couple of years and I'll cash in then.
    • practicing the phrase "Do you want fries with that"?
    Suggestions welcome.

Were it not a monastery, my favourite metaphor for PerlMonks would have been:

    • a Perl Ranch
    • a Perl Dojo1
    • a Perl Castle
    • a Perl Restaurant
    • a Perl Bedlam
    • a Perl Circus
    • a Perl Camp
    • a Perl Factory
    • a Perl Barrack

1 This is my absolute favourite and something that ideally I would like to create, devoted to the teaching and development of Perl::Jutsu and Perl::Do.

Why can't we just be a Buddhist monastery and teach Perl-do and Perl-jutsu? I researched this answer a bit, and found out that (according to the online J/E dictionary I use) Perl in Japanese is Paari (パール). So, we have some new areas to add to perlmonks:

      • パール道 (Perl-do): The Philosophy of Perl
      • パール術 (Perl-jutsu): The Technique of Perl
Why can't we just be a Buddhist monastery and teach Perl-do and Perl-jutsu?

Because it is not: the religious metaphor of the Monastery is deliberately and for a good reason IMHO a generic one. But in some traits it is more of a western nature.

I researched this answer a bit, and found out that (according to the online J/E dictionary I use) Perl in Japanese is Paari (パール).

Thank you for your research, which I certainly value much and will save for future reference, but it is my understanding that 道 and 術 are kanji while the transliteration of "perl" is probably katakana, and I don't have the slightest idea if one can mix them freely like you do. Not saying that you can't, I just don't know! Hopefully someone with a better Japanese knowledge will shed some light on this. Incidentally not too much time ago I heard that $Larry is also studying it.

Update: liverpole informs me that it's fine to mix katakana with kanji.

So, we have some new areas to add to perlmonks

Haha, adding new areas, no seriously: haha! Like it or not, this is the most common source of downvotes in PMDs. While I hate that this is the case a priori... on a really serious basis, I would also not add such areas. For Perl-jutsu and Perl-do should permeate quite about everything anyway. When you tell someone how to do some particular thing in answer to a SoPW, you're teaching a little (or not so little) piece of Perl-jutsu. With passing many pieces of Perl-jutsu, and slowly showing how to shape a Perl program in a perlish way, the teaching of elements of Perl-do also takes place. In fact the latter is not really something that can be taught in the strictest sense, it is probably more true that it is something one gains conscience of in the long run, day by day.

パール道 (Perl-do): The Philosophy of Perl

I think that as with some other Japanese words, "philosophy" is an inaccurate translation of the real meaning of "do"...

    3. perl -d

    My Programming Style is
    • perl4 style
    • procedural
    • object oriented
    • functional
    • a linear programm without subs or objects (they confuse me)
    • copy and paste style
    • a procedural flavour , with a functional touch and some objects to spice it up
    • goto spaghetti style
    • perlmonks style
    • I don't need style. I am perfect

I'm feeling a bit immature today...

Being a Programmer is a lot like being a member of the worlds oldest profession because...

1.) They both begin with 'P'.

I suggest that My Favorite Holy War is: be repeated with more options, and turned into a double poll like Re: poll ideas quest (housework).

Some more options that come into my mind are:

    • IE vs. Firefox
    • Linux vs. BSD
    • PC vs. Mac
    • Intel vs. AMD
    • Qwerty vs. Dvorak
    • (Update) MySQL vs. SQLite

    Please suggest more options.

Update: yes, the point of this poll was to advertize my old poll idea on housework. The holy wars thing is just a convenient excuse for it.

      • vi vs emacs
      • i++ vs ++i
      • indent width
      • tabs vs spaces
      • expr and action; vs action if expr;

And don't start adding non-IT stuff like music

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn
        • vi vs emacs
        • tabs vs spaces

These two were in the original My Favorite Holy War is: poll, I meant that poll to be extended with options.

Brace placement style. A lot of people tend to be very religious about this.

      # The best way... if (something) { do something; do some more; } else { whatever; whatever; } # The acceptable style: if (something) { do something; do some more; } else { whatever; whatever; } # The classic K&R style (ugh): if (something) { do something; do some more; } else { whatever; whatever; } # The conversational style... if (something) {do something; do some more} else {whatever; whatever}

I'm not sure if there's any major variants that I've missed.

      sas

The best, and only acceptable way is, of course:

        # The best way... if (something) { do something; do some more; } else { whatever; whatever; }

        Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn
The old PC vs. Mac idea isn't as relevant as it once was since the Macs of today (and yesterday to an extent) are built on the same basic architecture as PCs. To be more accurate it should probably read Windows vs. (OS X|Mac|Apple).

      • Perl vs. my @otherlangs = ('Ruby','Python','JAVA');$otherlangs[rand($#otherlangs)];
      • Perlmonks vs. $trollnames[rand($#trollnames)];

. . . and I'll leave populating @trollnames as an exercise for the reader.

#my sig used to say 'I humbly seek wisdom. '. Now it says:
      use strict;
      use warnings;
      I humbly seek wisdom.

That never chooses the last troll. Use $trollnames[rand(@trollnames)] instead.

it is with great hesitation I submit this as a poll idea:

when I discuss scripting with family/friends, they:

    • turn and talk to somebody else
    • get nervous and hide the laptop
    • become intrigued
    • fall asleep
    • ask how to get a job
    • ask if I can automate their job
    • run away screaming
    • change the subject
    • call me a geek
      • Bring up some obscure problem they had with their computer that makes no sense then look at you expectantly

      - tye

when I discuss scripting with family/friends, they:
      • ask you wheter you can also program
        especially
You know I have this (bug|annoying behaviour) in program XY, will you fix it?
And if you say "no" it's:
        Wait, I thought you're a programmer?

Thanks for the poll suggestion; they have been rather thin of late. Unfortunately, this one is rather close to At my main job I mostly occupy my..., but then it took me a while to find it even when I knew it was there and it certainly has been a while since it was posted. So it might be worth posting this one now.

It unfortunately seems that most of the pollsters have also run out of steam as far as actually putting up polls. If you (yes, you, the one reading this right now; stop looking over your shoulder as it makes you look paranoid) would like to earn the awesome power of posting new polls at PerlMonks (not just poll suggestions), then come up with some good poll ideas, put some polish on them (believe it or not, many of our polls actually involved research), and post them in this thread. If they tickle the gods, you could easily win a "Member of:" item for your homenode.

I can't f**king believe camel is not an option...

Update: also, the same poll (with some differences) is already in Past Polls.

That's because a camel does not represent Perl. It reprents O'Reilly media, who uses the image of a camel to sell Perl books. This is not to diss O'Reilly, who have always been very supportive of Perl. The image of Perl is an onion.

I suppose that means we should have a poll about favourite soup ingredients.

        • another intruder with the mooring in the heart of the Perl

The past poll was seven years ago, and didn't include animals that people are likely to keep (other than on O'Reilly book covers). But using that criteria, I guess camel does apply in some parts of the world.

Now, to expand grinder's poll idea ;-D

Of all the gin joints in all the universes in all of fiction, I had to walk into:

      Update: s/Oh/Of/

      - tye

Great Groucho! I am not worthy to breathe the same air as you!

Revised: I should have said I was shocked, Shocked, to realize I'd overlooked two bars from that movie...

Thank you; I'm ashamed I didn't remember to include those two. May I use them?

By the way, you wouldn't happen to remember the name of the bar One-Thumb owned in the Thieve's World books, would you? It was the Vulgar Unicorn...

I'll add these, if you don't mind. Great picks.

Probably the fictional bar to appear the most often in films, books and TV is the Last Chance Saloon

But perhaps this doesn't count as it is both fictional and non-fictional

Many thanks, ++, and it's included.

It's interesting how there's any number of (in)famous bars in SF and fantasy, but so few in detective stories and westerns. You'd think the bars in High Noon or Shane or The Magnificent Seven would be memorable, but none of them come to mind.

So The Last Chance Saloon gets to stand in for all of them.

      • Moe's Bar
      • The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Great minds, and all that. Please click on Milliway's in the original list.

Ok, this one's boring, but I sincerely am wondering about the opinions of fellow monks. I personally only drool over the new regex/rule and not much anything else. Well, macro comes second, but not very close.

What do you think is the single most important feature of Perl 6?

    • specification-implementation separation
    • static typing
    • parameter specification
    • sigil invariance
    • "real" OOP
    • lazy eval
    • junctions and paralel programming
    • macros
    • new regex/rule
    • Parrot
    • Pugs
    • the fact that it is a new version to prove that Perl is still "alive"
    • the fact that it gives Perl 5 a lot of good ideas to steal from
What do you think is the single most important feature of Perl 6?

I personally believe that chromatic knows better, so I'm pillaging him:

      • lexically malleable grammars
      • the default grammar
      • continuations
      • co-routines
      • generators
      • hyperoperators
      • multiple dispatch
      • multiple simultaneous versions of the same module existing in process
      • STM
      • hypothetical variables

      My personal (humourous) addition:

      • its ability to become a typical troll's flamebait

As far as your options are concerned, I'd rename some of them as follows:

      • static typing => the type system
      • parameter specification => function signatures
      • "real" OOP => solid object system, with roles and metaclasses
      • lazy eval => lazy lists

    [Pp]erl is *NOT* ...

    1. good for writing OSen (unless you have access to a computer)
    2. a route to fame (outside the Monastery &Co.) and fortune
    3. PERL
    4. yet debauched in a proprietary version from _____ (pick a villain)
    5. a tool for putting the toothpaste back in the tube
    6. to be mixed with Single Malt scotch (in a glass, that is)
    7. able to prevent religious wars over editors
    8. an appropriate addition to Oyster stew
    9. overburdened with good buzz

Perhaps this needs a "kicker" IMO; a final choice that's (even more) utterly outlandish....

      • Enigma - More of a history lesson, before computers were computers.
      • Swordfish - Does Halley Berry really go for crackers?
      • Firewall - Harrison Ford as a geek trapped in a drone's job, but at least he gets to kick butt at the end.

      "I'm a Jew, Chief Petty Officer! I don't have a Christian name!"

Re: poll ideas quest 2007 (Shat flames guy)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Jul 23, 2008 at 17:19 UTC

As poll titles can't contain links, this one can't work as is, but someone might recommend some solution for that. Also, the topic of this one might be wrong for polls.

The shat flames guy really was…

    • telling the truth
    • installing perl instead of VB on a linux box, annoyed with learning perl, making a silly joke
    • 12, but joking otherwise
    • older, but funny
    • trolling
    • flaming
    • actually a well-known monk

The answers are not really exclusive, but that's not a big problem I think.

Update 2011-06-07: apl has posted the similar Re: poll ideas quest 2011 about what is for key pls.

      I like it!

      Also, how about:

      My computer poops flames because...

      • I listened to shat flames guy
      • There was too much ramen in the fan
      • There was not enough ramen in the fan
      • Wait, I can't install VB on linux?
      • I CAN HAZ CHEEZBURGER?
      meh.
If you think "kitty hair and ramen noodles guy" would be as good at bringing this classic to mind, I'd rather it said that.

Re: links, it could be made to work with some coding effort. (A "this title contains link" flag or gimmick number affecting just the nodelet and the poll-specific pages.) Failing that, you could just make the entirety of each answer a link to the thread.

Well, if you're thinking of changing the code, I'd think it would be a better solution to add a way to show some extra text between the title and the options (in the nodelet, the normal poll view, and the vote displaytype).

Without changing code, you could rewrite the poll title so some of the answers start with "he is" with "he" linking to the post or something. That would bring up gender-neutral pronouns flame in the poll thread so maybe it's better to link "lied" and "told the truth" etc or even say "lied in that thread" and link the "that thread".

How do you prefer to develop software projects?

    • Get specs from management/marketing and follow them to the letter.
    • Get specs from management/marketing then just do what you want anyway.
    • Assemble a large committee of managers/marketers.
    • Assemble a large committee of end users.
    • Assemble a large committee of programmers.
    • Fork someone elses project.
    • Close your eyes and pull specs out of thin air.
    • Just start coding and see where it takes you.
    • Projects? I don't do no stinking projects.
Write a quick & dirty tool for myself & let manglement take the blame when everyone wants a copy

In my most recent hard times I was with...

  • El Explicito
  • Mad Bomber
  • Frying Pan/Fire Tactician
  • Shaman
  • X-user
  • Miracle Worker
  • Taskmaster
  • Maestro
  • Princess (unfair, perhaps, as these tend, overwhelmingly, to be males)
  • Maestro
  • ... myself ?

    Here they are:

    From rec.humor.funny Mon Mar 16 10:38:56 1992
    From: samjones@leo.unm.edu (Sam Jones)
    Newsgroups: rec.humor.funny
    Subject: Nine Types of Users
    Keywords: original, original, funny, computer
    Date: 14 Mar 92 00:30:05 GMT

This is my own, though the style is a blatant copy of Matt Groening.
Scon is short for Student Consultant. Scons are people hired to help users learn and work with the university's machinery.
A pod is a UNM term for a place where such machinery is made available.

    The nine types of users

El Explicito - "I tried the thing, ya know, and it worked, ya know, but now it doesn't, ya know?"

    Advantages: Provides interesting communication challanges.

    Disadvantages: So do chimps.

Symptoms: Complete inability to use proper nouns

Real Case: One user walked up to a certain Armenian pod manager and said, "I can't get what I want!" The pod manager leaned back, put his hands on his belt-buckle, and said, "Well, ma'am, you've come to the right place."

Mad Bomber - "Well, I hit ALT-f6, shift-f8, CNTRL-f10, f4, and f9, and now it looks all weird."

Advantages: Will try to find own solution to problems.

Disadvantages: User might have translated document to Navajo without meaning to.

Symptoms: More than six stopped jobs in UNIX, a 2:1 code-to-letter ratio in WordPerfect

Real Case: One user came in complaining that his WordPerfect document was underlined. When I used reveal codes on it, I found that he'd set and unset underline more than fifty times in his document.

Frying Pan/Fire Tactician - "It didn't work with the data set we had, so I fed in my aunt's recipe for key lime pie."

    Advantages: Will usually fix error.

Disadvantages: 'Fix' is defined VERY loosely here.

Symptoms: A tendancy to delete lines that get errors instead of fixing them.

Real Case: One user complained that their program executed, but didn't do anything. The scon looked at it for twenty minutes before realizing that they'd commented out EVERY LINE. The user said, "Well, that was the only way I could get it to compile."

Shaman - "Last week, when the moon was full, the clouds were thick, and formahaut was above the horizon, I typed f77, and lo, it did compile."

Advantages: Gives insight into primative mythology.

Disadvantages: Few scons are anthropology majors.

Symptoms: Frequent questions about irrelavent objects.

Real Case: One user complained that all information on one of their disks got erased (as Norton Utilities showed nothing but empty sectors, I suspect nothing had ever been on it). Reasoning that the deleted information went *somewhere*, they wouldn't shut up until the scon checked four different disks for the missing information.

X-user - "Will you look at those. . .um, that resolution, quite impressive, really."

Advantages: Using the cutting-edge in graphics technology. Disadvantages: Has little or no idea how to use the cutting-edge in graphics technology.

    Symptoms: Fuzzy hands, blindness

Real Case: When I was off duty, two users sat down in front of me at DEC station 5000/200s that systems was reconfiguring. I suppressed my laughter while, for twenty minutes, they sat down and did their best to act like they were doing exectly what they wanted to do, even though they couldn't log in.

Miracle Worker - "But it read a file from it yesterday!" 'Sir, at a guess, this disk has been swollowed and regurgitated.' "But I did that a month ago, and it read a file from it yesterday!"

Advantages: Apparently has remarkable luck when you aren't around.

Disadvantages: People complain when scons actually use the word 'horse-puckey'.

Symptoms: Loses all ability to do impossible when you're around. Must be the kryptonite in your pocket.

Real Case: At least three users have claimed that they've loaded IBM WordPerfect from Macintosh disks.

Taskmaster - "Well, this is a file in MacWrite. Do you know how I can upload it to MUSIC, transfer it over to UNIX from there, download it onto an IBM, convert it to WordPerfect, and put it in three-column format?"

    Advantages: Bold new challanges.

Disadvantages: Makes one wish to be a garbage collector.

Symptoms: An inability to keep quiet. Strong tendancies to make machines do things they don't want to do.

Real Case: One user tried to get a scon to find out what another person's E-mail address was even though the user didn't know his target's home system, account name, or real name.

Maestro - "Well, first I sat down, like this. Then I logged on, like this, and after that, I typed in my password, like this, and after that I edited my file, like this, and after that I went to this line here, like this, and after that I picked my nose, like this. . ."

Advantages: Willing to show you exactly what they did to get an error.

Disadvantages: For as long as five or six hours.
Symptoms: Selective deafness to the phrases, "Right, right, okay, but what was the ERROR?", and a strong fondness for the phrase, "Well, I'm getting to that."

Real Case: I once had to spend half an hour looking over a user's shoulder while they continuously retrieved a document into itself and denied that they did it (the user was complaining that their document was 87 copies of the same thing).

Princess (unfair, perhaps, as these tend, overwhelmingly, to be males) "I need a Mac, and someone's got the one I like reserved, would you please garrote him and put him in the paper recycling bin?"

Advantages: Flatters you with their high standards for your service.

Disadvantages: Impresses you with their obliviousness to other people on this planet.

Symptoms: Inability to communicate except by complaining.

Real Case: One asked a scon to remove the message of the day because he (the user) didn't like it.

      The proposed title confused me.

If I were a Superhero, my superhero power would be:

    • X-ray Vision, and I'd use it to see all the things that I usually don't get to see
    • Telepathy (mind-reading), and I'd read other peoples' minds so that I could always manage to do the right thing
    • Flying, and I'd fly across the universe to see all the really cool stuff
    • Animal Empathy, and I'd responsibly lead a vast army of animals to maintain world order

Now for the hard part... (un)fortunately, your superpower must be inextricably linked to one of your dominant personality traits.

In my case, my superpower is called "Over-Analysis", as I am doomed to slowness of action, but I eventually do the right thing in a couple of weeks...

    What would your superpower be?

Where do you want *them* to go today?
      What would your superpower be?
      • Writing programs with no syntax and runtime errors whatsoever, whatever their length

      • super-lazyness
      • super-impatience
      • super-hubris

Now for the hard part... (un)fortunately, your superpower must be inextricably linked to one of your dominant personality traits.

You can't give extra conditions like that in a perlmonks poll.

Update 2008 sep 6: turns out this is wrong, see Re: Shat flames guy (Was: poll ideas quest 2007).

    The best song evar is:

    1. Asia - Heat of the Moment
    2. Journey - Separate Ways
    3. Styx - Come Sail Away
    4. Bob Seger - Love to Watch Her Strut
    5. Prince - Little Red Corvette
    6. Kenny Loggins - Highway to the Danger Zone
    7. Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills
    8. I only listen to John Denver!
    meh.
-1. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
      0. Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

(OK, I'm not that old, but I still like them very much)

Ah!!! I forgot a few! How could I forget about Mark Knopfler?

        9. Toto - Hold the Line (and Africa)

        meh.

if you are using Dire Straits you gotta use either Roller Girl or Sultans of Swing
        Queen - Bavarian Rhapsody
Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love
        Blondie - Call Me
Boston - any song they had, they all sound the same

        g_White

Nice list, though for most groups I'd choose a different song, but that is all about taste.

In your list however, I miss two songs that match that mood:

      • Kansas - Dust in the Wind
      • Hazel O'Connor - Will You

For me personal, it would be

      • Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

I can't believe I forgot Kansas and Pink Floyd. Of all the good Pink Floyd songs that's exactly the one I'd choose.

Also, Carry on My Wayward Son, various Boston songs that I can't remember the names of, Jim Croce - Don't Mess With Jim/ Leroy Brown

        meh.

I've been looking at some of the early Polls from 2000-2003 may of the Monks who commented/voted on these polls are no longer around.

Would it not now be worth re-running some of these Polls for the benefit of those here now?

I'm sure that those who voted/commented in the past and are still here would not mind a re-run.

You can still vote to old polls and view their results, so I think it's only worth to re-run old polls if the question is such that many monks would change their answers now.

        > You can still vote to old polls ...

by ambrus (Abbot) on May 08, 2008 at 10:08 UTC

Which backslash escape will be the last to get meaning in perl?

    • \F (Update 2015-06-08: \F is now used starting from perl 5.16.0)
    • \I
    • \J
    • \M
    • \O
    • \P (Update 08 aug 29: \P is used up, dunno how I messed this up.)
    • \T
    • \Y
    • \i
    • \j
    • \m
    • \o (Update 2010-11-24: remove: \o is now used starting from perl 5.13.3)
    • \q
    • \y
    • some punctuation
    • some control char
    • some non-ascii
    • another double meaning
    • (Update:) third meaning for \1 or \b or \N (Update 2010-11-24: added \N for it too now has two meanings)

Don't worry, vim regexen are much worse.

Re: poll ideas quest 2007 (Best video game character)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Jul 10, 2008 at 09:08 UTC

A series of four poll ideas about classic PC games. I recommend running any of the last two only soon after running one of the first two.

Which video game hero would win in a fight?

    • Super Mario
    • the Prince of Persia
    • Commander Keen
    • the Lost Vikings (fighting together)
    • Jazz Jackrabbit
    • Chell

Which video game boss would win in a fight?

    • Tatanga
    • Grand Vizier Jaffar
    • The Grand Intellect aka Mortimer McMire
    • Tomator
    • Devan Shell
    • Glados

Which video game allied NPC would you most like as a friend

    • the owls from Tree Zone
    • the white mouse of the Princess
    • Messie
    • an Aftiek
    • the bird
    • the Companion Cube

Which video game weapon would you like?

    • Fire Flower
    • the blue Flame
    • Vorticon Rail-Gun
    • flaming arrows
    • RF missile
    • the Portal Gun

Please also post suggestions about better choices to the companions idea, the exact name (including spelling and capitalization) of listed entries, and other video games that could be included. Please don't suggest Wolfenstein 3D as a game, for that'd generate flames about whether Godwin's Law applies to the other flames or not.

Update: s/Companion Cube/Portal Gun/. Thanks to Lawliet for noticing.

Update 2012-03-09: changed a long description to "an Aftiek". How could I not know the name of that jolly guy?

Shouldn't the last option of the video game weapon poll (currently the companion cube) be the portal gun?

      <(^.^-<) <(-^.^<) <(-^.^-)> (>^.^-)> (>-^.^)>
Which video game allied NPC would you most like as a friend
    • Error

What about DOOM's BFG? Or Megaman X's hidden hadouken?

    • \1 (backreference)
    • \101 (octal)
    • \A
    • \B
    • \C
    • \D
    • \E

    • \N{LATIN SMALL LETTER A}

    • \PL (Update 2008-08-29: added, dunno how I missed this)
    • \P{IsLower} (Update 2008-08-29: added, dunno how I missed this)
    • \Q
    • \R
    • \S
    • \U
    • \V
    • \W
    • \X
    • \Z
    • \a
    • \b (backslash)
    • \b (boundary)
    • \cT
    • \d
    • \e
    • \f
    • \g1
    • \g{-1}
    • \g{named}
    • \h
    • \k<named> or \k{named} or \k'named'
    • \l
    • \n
    • \o{20023} (Update 2010-11-24: added, new in perl 5.13.3)
    • \pL
    • \p{IsLower}
    • \r
    • \s
    • \t
    • \u
    • \v
    • \w
    • \x41
    • \x{2019}
    • \z

We could also do favourite regex modifier, but that'd be too similar to I resolve to finally grok and use the regex option... except that we'd now also have /p. See also The most annoying common way to get a string literal in Perl is....

    • Freak cosmic rays
    • Moving mouse pointer with keyboard
    • Navigating GUIs with keyboard only

Re: poll ideas quest 2007 (Mopping water)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Aug 19, 2008 at 22:20 UTC

In order to mop the kitchen floor, the Right Way to prepare the bucket of cleaning agent is…

      • fill with water, then pour some soap
      • pour some soap, then fill with water
      • fill water only
      • mopping is unnecessary
      • only my spouse needs to know this
      • I pay someone to mop

Update: This post was preceded by an hour long IRC discussion about what English terms to use for where I use “soap” and “cleaning agent” above. There weren't too many good suggestions for “cleaning agent” (there's “solution”), and I'm not really satisfied with that phrase. However, there were more possibilities instead of “soap”: qw“detergent bleach ammonia surfactant”, “pine cleaner”. I tried to defend the statement that the dictionary definition for “soap” is clear enough in that it includes only produces whose main element is an organic substance made from fat and alkali, whereas you usually mop with a product whose main ingredient is hydrogen chloride. We decided this was false, “soap” includes both kind of substances in informal speech. Indeed, most people don't even know the difference, which is why there are home accidents from mixing bleach made of hydrogen chloride with basic chemicals, when a chemical reaction causes poisonous chlorine gas to be released (don't try this at home).

        soap makes bubbles

The bleach I use for mopping makes bubbles too. (By the way, according to the dictionary, “surfactant” means that it makes bubbles.)
