What's facebook?

(That's only partially a joke question; I've heard of it but never so much as typed the word before. I guess my question is: what do benefit do you get from it?)

I'm wondering that too. I went ahead and just joined facebook (a friend sent me an invite), and I joined linked-in a while ago. I still don't "get" what they're for. People I don't know from work (it's a big company) keep sending me whatever it is you send on linked-in, I accept the thing-a-ma-jigs from friends and other people I know, and it's supposed to be a good thing to build up your # of contacts. But I don't know what the purpose is. My friend said it's to keep in contact with people, but I already do that with friends and other people that I know. I suppose there's less of a chance that I will lose contact with some people, and I might find someone that I lost contact with, I dunno, maybe that's about it.
I'm using Linked-In as a way to remember to keep in contact with people from previous groups and jobs. Every month or so, I review my connections there and send off a few e-mails to check in with people. In a way, I guess it's an address book, but the nice part is that people there keep their own contact info updated for me. If a former co-worker changes jobs and home city, they update their info and I can easily contact them.
I'm a big fan of LinkedIn, as I got my current job through networking that I did on LinkedIn. I'm on Facebook, but mostly for the "social" aspect, although I'm rarely logged on. Mostly, I'm on these social networking sites to help people find me.

To name a couple: Some use the built-in blog functions to chronicle their doings and goings-on. Others use the spam functions like myspace's 'bulletins' to harass multiple people at a time. It's a simple way to share photos & vids. Just making myself available has provided quite a few business opportunities. For all the silliness, there's quite few useful things.
