Pretty much anything from (formerly) Mark Russinovich' SysInternals. Especially useful are ProcessExplorer, TCP View, Page Defrag, Handle, Contig, Autoruns. It (the website) and they (the tools) were very recently bought by MS. They have already messed cosmetically with previously simple, and easy to use website to the point that if you visit there using Opera configured to say it is Opera, nothing works. Have it tell them it is Mozilla and things function (for now). So far, they do not appear to have f*** with the tools in any substantial way, but you can pretty much guarentee that it won't be long before they all change from being small, 3-files in a zip downloads to huge, complicated, spread stuff all over your disk without giving you a choice MSIs. No doubt with dependancies upon 2 or 3 hundred meg of MS "relocatables" that you have no idea what they are and will never use but can't live without. So, get'em now while the getting is good, 'cause the marketeers are gonna f*'em up RealSoonNow. Examine what is said, not who speaks -- Silence betokens consent -- Love the truth but pardon error. From the new sysinternals site: Sysinternals Live is a service that enables you to execute Sysinternals tools directly from the Web without hunting for and manually downloading them. Simply enter a tool's Sysinternals Live path into Windows Explorer or a command prompt as http://live.sysinternals.com/<toolname> or \\live.sysinternals.com\tools\<toolname>. You can view the entire Sysinternals Live tools directory in a browser at http://live.sysinternals.com. Two years too late, but I would recommend Windows_Services_for_UNIX, but I wouldn't use the bundled Perl from there, instead add pkgsrc-interix or debian interix Perl.	[reply]

This is really Off-Topic. However, I can recommend a few programs that still run on my venerable Windows 98 box: AVG for anti-virus software. it still updates and runs weekly. HyperSnap-DX, a really, really good, basic image capture and editing program from Hyperionics. It's been letting me scan photos (with my $50 scanner) for close to ten years. Excellent value. Goldwave for audio editing and Multiquence for editing and sequencing audio and video. I still use Goldwave for most of my editing, althought I'm trying to move it all over to Audacity, which is nice, but nowhere near as convenient as Multiquence. PMMail98 -- an excellent E-Mail program that was ported from the original program written for OS/2, which I also paid for. EditPad, a terrific editor that I now see has been split into Lite and Pro versions. V, a terrific file viewer. WinAmp - a really nice MP3 player that keeps wanting to upgrade to something bigger, fatter and slower. I keep saying no every time I use it. SecureCRT and SecureFX from VanDyke Technologies -- really fantastic SSH and secure FTP clients. I don't use the SSH client much any more, but I use the secure FTP program regularly. 4DOS for the command line -- an absolutely dynamite replacement for DOS from JP Software; my license for this software probably goes back close to 20 years -- basically it puts the power of bash into a DOS command line. Installing this on my 386/16 sometime in 1988-89 was mind-blowing. Command line editing, filename completion, command line history, on-line help .. wow. TimeSlice, a terrific time tracking and billing package from Modesitt Software (used to be Maui Software). I used this during the Internet boom to track my time and bill clients. Very nice. WinVNC. Using a remote desktop is really, really cool. Wow -- there are actually quite a few terrific programs that I have on that Windows machine. I haven't bought new software for that machine in quite a while, so everything is frozen at about the year 2000 when I was self-employed and using that machine as my only workstation. I now have three Linux machines in addition to the Windows machine. The Windows machine is used mostly for audio editing and image scanning, but still (thank goodness) works fine. SecureCRT and SecureFX from VanDyke Technologies ++ for these. Well worth the money I paid years and years ago. What I particularly like is that they can all share the same identity file. I also like their Entunnel -- a nice, headless SSH port tunneling program that sits as an icon in the tray. -xdg Code written by xdg and posted on PerlMonks is public domain. PuTTY was nice -- I used it for a while, but it had its limitations -- that's OK, it's free software. So I ended up trying SecureCRT and loved it -- I probably paid for it after using it less than a week. I could ramble on about features and ease of use, but for me the bottom line is, whatever you're doing, working on the computer, splitting wood, cooking dinner, doing some demolition, driving a motorcycle or skiing, it's fantastic to have really nice equipment. It just works, it doesn't break, it doesn't get in your way, it doesn't fight with you or fail when it's inconvenient. It just works. I like that. I really like that. Either Cygwin or (the light-weight option) MinGW + MSYS. Augment Windows with a productive command-line environment. The perfect companion to Perl.	[reply]

If I could ++ you more than once for suggesting MinGW and MSYS, I would do that ... but don't get too excited - the only good things about the Cygwin project are that: a) it produced MSYS; b) it's possible to cross-compile on Cygwin for native Win32 (but why would one bother when one can simply build for native Win32 using MSYS anyway) And I take issue (but in a totally non-hostile way) with the notion that MSYS is a "light-weight option". Note that Strawberry Perl comes with most of MinGW (g77 is missing, as someone recently complained) ... so it's really just a case of recommending Strawberry Perl plus MSYS :-) Cheers, Rob	[reply]

I�m really pleased this "OT" hasn�t been reaped for obvious reasons. I found some old favourites of mine here already and some great new ones. Some of the old applications such as PFE32 can give the new text editors a run for their money. If you have a personal favourite I'm sure others in the Monastery would be interested to hear about it. There must be hundreds of other gems lying on taskbars or hidden away, share them!. Some of my FREE favourites WordWeb, English dictionary and thesaurus sits on the taskbar very handy for synonyms. Filezilla , Drag and Drop FTP and SFTP client. PFE32 , Small text editor which carries line numbers and is small enough to fit on a floppy. VLC Media Player , Fast media client that seems to open files that others can�t. SnagIt , Screen capture and editing software, good for capturing small sections of the screen, and transferring to a document, also good for video capture. Now in version 8 + but this version is free.	[reply]

A few favorites: mplayer plays nearly everything you can see or hear. (I prefer the console-only builds) Noah for handling virtually any "ark I've." HeidiSQL for mySQL dev. It's been on my list since the 'MySQL GUI' days. TortoiseSVN. Listed by Arunbear, but it deserves a second mention. And a few others: Safari for win32. It's there. Might as well try it out. SciTE is great if (like most editors) you take the time to really bend it to your will. foobar2000, a 'lite' audio player with plenty of plug-ins available to make it heavy. Privoxy to filter out banner ads. (...they still use those right?) aspell for win32. 'Reccomended' for those pesky misspellings. ;^) For more small apps, visit http://tinyapps.org/. Speaking of SciTE, my favorite FOSS text editor on Win32 is Notepad++ which uses the scintilla editor as it's core, nicely packaged and configured and very user-friendly... if you want lots of nice features in a very light-weight package, but you don't want to waste/spend time tweaking, give it a try. I use it every day. I'm also quite fond of EPIC for the Eclipse Workbench. It helps bring the ease of developing and debugging with a full IDE to Perl. Also, Xming is a light, simple, effective X server I use every day. I'd like to give my endorsements for PuTTY and FileZilla and Firefox - and Opera. I would use Opera as my primary browser if only I wasn't so addicted to the FF add-ons. :)	[reply]

How can anyone live on Windows without Vim?:) Larry wrote about taking a bit of the old country to non Unix systems. Well, for me it worked the other way round: Vim started my interest in Unix and consequently, Perl.	[reply]

free: AVG anti-virus Comodo firewall itunes - say what you will, its a heavy weight, but i've never used a music player i've liked more Media Player Classic - no stupid unnecessary features, just plays movies. all that you want and nothing else DBPowerAmp - for converting audio file formats, plenty of plugins for format you can find.
