in thread LAMP and hosting: Convenient Perl solution, similar to PHP setup?

Dreamhost, which is great in terms of storage amount and lots more, but in any perl framework I wanted to try I always ended up not being able to compile some crucial modules... must be the 5.8.4 or something but it seems like a great host for PHP but no joy for perl
Dreamhost allows you to compile your own perl and your own modules to your heart's content. I have done that on my $8 a month plan.

have you been able to run Catalyst? also, I get odd results trying to compile modules that require the newest version of Carp which I could also not compile...
