The blanket statement was meant to start a conversation, hopefully amongst many monks. To that end, my OP has been, by and large, successful. I also hope it has gotten some people to reconsider their priorities from a purely coding perspective to taking the larger picture of the business into account.
And, hopefully, to realize that optimizing for CPU cycles in a language running in a 10-year old VM is rather silly.
My criteria for good software:
- Does it work?
- Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
