misty is getting a dye-sublimation system which means there could be more varieties of PM merchandise in the future. She would take care of all the work and give PerlMonks a percentage of the sales. So now we need to give her designs to work with and or items you would be interested in getting.

The most obvious items are:

Here are some other possibilities:

I'll leave it at that. If you've got ideas for items, cool designs, or know which items you'd be interested in getting let us know below.

I'd like to see at least two things. The first is a WWII style poster, with a lantern-jawed hacker looking off into the distance while bombers fly overhead. He's wearing sensible overalls and a hard hat, and he has the Camel in his hand. It's rendered in the simple, yet strong strokes like you'll see on Active State logos.

The caption says, "Perl Monks want YOU to use strict and -w."

For the second, just something nice that says 'PSI::ESP' on it. A nice sticker would be okay.

chromatic, that's a really good idea! So good that I gave a stab at it.
It's still a work in progress (I did it in one hour, just a rough sketch), but you can have a peek here.
I mostly need to detail the guy a bit more and find a better way to draw the planes...

      Comments are more than welcome!

Update: An improved version is available here. It still needs some polishing, but at least, there's the Camel.

YAPU: Yet Another Poster Update here

      <kbd>--
      my $OeufMayo = new PerlMonger::Paris({http => 'paris.mongueurs.net'});</kbd>

        Great idea and great picture!

Does any-one else round here remember Biggles? I never thought I would be posting about him here :) For the uninitiated Biggles was a fictional WWI pilot in stories by Capt WE Johns. To bring it back to perl when Biggles was in 266 squadron flew a Sopwith Camel! And to bring it back to the monastery, by some kind of weird pattern matching I have always thought of Sopwith when I have seen the SOPW around the monastery, could it be-

Seeker of Perl Wisdom in Transcendent Hack

++ to any-one who can tie all this together in a piece of monastery wear :)

Coming back to the real world now :) I also think the picture desrves a camel somewhere and I thought that the "Programming Republic of Perl" logo as a patch on the pilots bomber jacket would be perfect. (I know it's not strictly monastery wear but I would buy a jacket like that :)

        --
        my $chainsaw = 'Perl';

OeufMayo, you just totally blew my mind. :-)
        Where's the camel, though?

If you're going the poster route, I think a camel-headed monk (maybe based on Sean?) could be good. Probably a joke that requires more development time, though.

      Good idea

We need whole line of cube decorations.

      my $name = 'Ben Kittrell'; $name=~s/^(.+)\s(.).+$/\L$1$2/g; my $nick = 'tha' . $name . 'sta';
I LOVE this one! Great thought!

      Roy Alan

You could also do a poster with a Betty Page style dominatrix with use strict as the text. ;-)

    Bumper stickers/Slogans:

    • PM encircled by an oval, ala the European country stickers.
    • XPW, Same as above.
    • A trollish silhouette, surrounded by a red circle with a slash.
    • Red circle/Slash: /.
    • "Real PH's don't let other PH's use MSA."
    • "Perl hackers use CGI;"
    • "Thou Shalt Use <CODE> tags"

    Tchotchkes:

    • Little Buddha Antenna balls.
    • Plaster Buddha statues (not for use in Afghanistan).
    • Official PM hookas.
    • *Real* Coffee Mugs (e.g. 20 oz or better).
    • Erudil's Camel on coasters...perfect for those intra-cube flinging parties.
    • "Steins"
    • Anonymous Monk Silver Bullets...for use on those who really want them.
    • Action Figures (...oh, wait...)
    • And (of course) "PerlMonks: The Flame Thrower (It's a real hit with the kids...)"

    --f

Update: In reply to knobunc's reply below:

I'm aware of that, however, I'm thinking I'd rather any proceeds from the sale go to The Fearless Leader instead of CmdrTaco. Frankly, I like the Monastery better than Slashdot.

I want second the "Steins" idea. I'd love a pewter mug with a good japh on it.

I'd be more interested in products that simply had some obscure perl code on them than pictures or witticisms. Eg, camel code is preferable to TMTOWTDI.

Hmm, those who do a lot of CGI programming could purchase the "Lincoln" Stein then ... To make it a good in-joke, it would be a pewter stein in the shape of Abraham L.'s head (that's recognizable outside the US, isn't it? =)

Philosophy can be made out of anything. Or less -- Jerry A. Fodor

You can already get the camel over at . While I am not opposed to the PM stuff being the same, it is probably better to have distinct stuff.

      -ben
Plastic/Plaster it's all the same, as long as it has a button, and every time you push it, to ask the buddha for wisdom, it spits out a quip of wisdome, one of which is post in SOPW %^).

    What? No Monk merchandise?
    • Robes
    • Sandles
    • Code Candles (Camel shaped!)
    • Incense
    • Vacation Packages to Asia
    • Poster of Vroom meditating before his terminal
    • and, of course, who could forget, our very own Camel!
But really, I believe the ultimate addition to every JAPH's personal Perl Shrine would be:

Poster of 1000 armed 3 headed Larry/Tom/Randal Deity holding the divine Perl Functions and Funny Characters

    -Lexicon

      Hair shirts, anybody?

Why not go on playing whith that XP frenzy ?

Any object showing your 'rank' inside the monastery :
    • Saint watch (with the year of 'sainthood' carved in)
    • Pontiff ring (like the 'big university' ring ???(It has always made the french man I am dream))
    • Abbot medallion
    • Friar cap with name ('friar xxxx')
    • ...
You got the idea, each level could have its object.
(As long as the object enable to clearly distinguish another Monk and its level)

I think that the higher your level the higher you'll be willing to pay to get your object.
(I'll do, even if I have not so many figures in my income.
I AM PROUD of being part of the monastery)

I know some objects may be difficult/impossible to customize but I'd really appreciate to have rare high quality item ( when I'll be a saint ;-)
(Hey the monastery members worth it !)

"Only Bad Coders Badly Code In Perl" (OBC2IP)
www.ibutton.com sells all sorts of jewellery, keychains, dogtags, etc with embedded ibuttons. If you got the rings used for unique ID's you could log into PM with your "ring" or "medallion".
I believe I remember stumbling across people who handle custom logos for ibutton-wear. If there is an interest, I will see if I can hunt up the sites again.

if that doesn't put your cereal box decoder ring to shame, I don't know what will:)
Oooh! You could put your Geek Code and Monk Map coordinates into those puppies. Among other things, I'm sure. (Perl DeCSS? ;-)

I like this idea! (Of course it has nothing to do with me getting close to friarhood ;))

      $japh->{'Caillte'} = $me;

The only problem is that If I got a Abbot medallion, then when I reached Saint level, I would have to purchase a ring. However, some would view this as a feature rather than a bug with arhuman's idea, seeing as it would generate more revenue for PM.

One way around this is to shell out a ridiculous amount of money for a given item which would have an LED display in the appropriate area of the item that would have a wireless link to PM HQ Inc. and would grab your current XP to display on your object.

I'd love to see a coaster that says: "I'd rather be holding a perlmonks.org mug." =)
"A man's maturity -- consists in having found again the seriousness one had as a child, at play." --Nietzsche
I'd love to see a coaster that says: "I'd rather be holding a perl monk."

Ermmmm, no, this is a bad idea... Please ignore.

What about a Perl Monks prayer wheel? Or a mini-altar, or the Gospel according to Larry? Everyone does mouse-mats and T-shirts: be different. The Buddhists have those natty prayer-flags - you could do a Perl Monks prayer flag! I'd love to have one of those in my cube.

How about Holy Water, then you could really bless those objects, even cast daemons into NT boxes (figuring that a daemon's better than a background process any day).

A prayer mat would be neat-o, as would a Perl Monks calendar, complete with a new meditation for each day of the year. Put enough holy days in the calendar and I could take half the year off work! Wooo-hooo!

(PS: I want more than XP for this rubbish -- gimme kick-backs ;-)

I mentioned this last night in the CB, but how about something like the PerlMonks Magic 8 Ball, maybe not as detailed as here, but with replies like

The umbrella would have to read no rain; to be synactically correct. But the Beer/Coffee hat:

      --
      $Stalag99{"URL"}="http://stalag99.keenspace.com";

I think that the one great thing you need is a Perlmonk's jacket. I know i will buy it because I *need* a new jacket, badly. Or maybe just a sweatshirt, which would be good too.

On the front it could maybe have a little code snippet and on the back could have, in some big cool font, Perlmonks.org written slanted northward with a little saying or something under it. I am thinking gray-ish color.

UPDATE: By the way, I would give a ++ to the mousepad, wallclock, and the totebag.

    Almost a Perl hacker.

I'd like a hooded sweatshirt version of the allready existing T-shirt.

      my $name = 'Ben Kittrell'; $name=~s/^(.+)\s(.).+$/\L$1$2/g; my $nick = 'tha' . $name . 'sta';
I wouldn't mind either a hooded sweatshirt or a T-shirt.. but I was also thinking of a little beanie PM (not sure if that's really something that monks would use/want.. ).. or a small plush toy of a PM.. something to sit on top of a monitor or whatnot.

I'm not a big one for wearing advertising T-Shirts, unless the logos are small.. but I'd definately like to see non wearable or car-stick-on-able items like _large_ coffee mugs. No shot glasses please. Mouse Pad's is a novility I haven't seen mentioned yet. Or how about other office supplies like post-it's, pens, etc?

This may be stupid but there's one prase that I tought of today. I was looking through a bunch of posts (me being new here and all) and was thinking to myself about what a great place this is for learning. Then in pops "Monk U".. which shortly became "Monk U!"

For what it's worth, I got a good laugh out of it.. and I still am to tell you the truth :)

Fridge magnets are a great idea. But as well as simple round, etc ones with logos on, how about 'code snippet' fridge magnets?

You know you can get sets of words to put on your fridge (which visitors etc normally rearrange to form obscenities or poetry according to their drunkenness or wit) well why not bits of code?

Some careful thought is needed to select your set of snippets, but perl is ideal for this due to the compactness and expressiveness of the language.

Sorry if the idea is to produce monk-specific things, perhaps the set could contain some perl-monkish comment blocks :-)

Does anyone else think this is a good idea, if so should I/we put some more thought into what a good set of tokens would be?

This looks fun! Unfortunately, the site's home page says Perl Toys is currently closed for business.

        :-(

Yikes. Nothing new under the sun.

        Thanks for the pointer.

What percentage of the sales goes to Perl Monks if we buy from this site?
Man, I would buy a set of fridge magnets in a heartbeat. I passed on them when perltoys.com came out with them and have been kicking myself repeatedly since then....

What about designing a logo first ?

You could then decline it on all the stuff (sticker, mousepad, T-shirt...) and in the monastery.

It could be based on the sitting monk of the T-shirt, But I'd personally prefer something on japanese char...

A set of reference coffee cups, with regex, favorite modules, etc. with a monk looking like Rodan's Thinker, reading a book.

A monkish tie for those of us forced to occassionally have to wear one. (I've worn out my Dilbert tie.)

Monogrammed PM underwear for initimate coding experiences.

PM pens and pencils with long skinny monks on them.

PM keyboard ref strip, with "use strict" or die "you toad" on them.

    PM decoder rings

    Bumper stickers:

    • Perl >> Java
    • Perl - Extreme Freestyle
    • Perl Coder Onboard (obvious yellow sign)
    • Perl Monk Onboard
    • My Mom (Dad) is a Perl Monk
    • Son (Daughter) of a Perl Monk
    • I wont give up my Perl until they delete it from my cold, hard disk

Monitor rear-view mirror with a Monk on it.

Bandaids with the words: "I should have used -w" on them.

A set of PM business card blanks you add to. The web page would accept custom input and then print quantity-500 of nice, glossy, fancy Perlish art work cards. They get sent to the user for $$.

A variety of PM oriented rubber ink stamps -

    • "Project not approved - insufficient use of Perl"
    • "PerlMonk Approved"
    • various camels, penguins, holding hands, etc.
    • "Perl Priority Project"

What I really need is a plush vroom doll to sit on top of my monitor.

    I would:

    • stick pins in it when I get server errors.
    • drown it in beer when my XP goes up.
    • dose it with vodka when the wiki nodes come online.
    • hose it with Tanqueray when it bans mr_leisure.
    • buy it Skiles gift certificates when it graduates.
    • and be at it's wedding when it meets Ms. Plush Vroom.

And, of course, it would be wearing a Primus T-shirt, and holding a jar of salsa in one hand, grinning maniacally.

    Small, cheap, and useful

As an admin, I have to swipe my ID through 50 doors a day. We horde promo ID tag zip strings. They're a little plastic clip with a retractable string in it (sort of like the ones the Janitor uses for his keys). The plastic part hooks to your pants, and the string end hooks to your ID. You pull, swipe, and let go. No fumbling, no fuss.

The plastic part has the logo on it.

For the less physical security conscious worker, how 'bout a multi-tool (the LeatherMonk)?

    Posters would be great.

  • Monks meditating in front of terminals
  • Picture/Phrase Combos
  • A large chunk of code colored in such a way that it creates a larger image
  • Parody posters (such as the WWII one mentioned above)
  • The Coder's Commandments, and other such important thing
  • Perl Poetry
  • An approxant map of the internet at one point in time
  • A diagram of program code

The artistic posibilities are endless, and posters can greatly add to the atmosphere of a room, cubical, or public place.

Sorry if these aren't the best ideas but most of the good ones are taken already...
    How about:

    • 24-CD holder case thingy (for the Perl CD-ROMS, etc...)
    • Perlmonk's shirt in 0x000000 (black)
    • bookmark or those little post-it booktags (to find that section in camel3 faster)
    • thermal mug (coffee or cold caffeinated quaff  ;-)

Also, the (self-bought) gift for making different levels could be enchanting, but it would make sense to start allowing those at level 4 or somewheres about there.

How about a Perl Monks calendar?

We could have something cool for each month (and the cover). Then we could mark significant events on the blurb for the days. We can have Saint's days based on when the different users were cannonized. Etc.

This idea is probably unworkable because the cost to print a calendar is proabaly high, and doing the prep work for all the pages is much worse than for 1 T-Shirt. But I would love for someone to prove me wrong.

    -ben

With all the monk picturess out there, I'm sure that we could put one together. Er, as long as no one objects. What would be cooler than a paper calendar, would be a paperless, random monk picture, random Perl fact-a-day, calendar.

If anyone embarks on this, I have a couple of pictures of me in my burnt up house for October...:)

Is there a Perl fact-a-day calendar out there already?

ok.. a bit late, but here are some clarifications: I am not going to do (nor will be able to) stickers, umbrellas, dark t-shirts, other non-flat items (mugs are an exception :) The reason for that is that dye-sublimation works only on white or light-colored items/fabrics. Maybe someone else can do other items? Also there's one more limitation on the choice of fabrics. It has to be polyester or (in worst case) poly mix. Cotton better? Maybe, but it cannot be used in sublimation, also there are really neat, comfortable, high quality polyester outer, cotton inner t's and sweat shirts, and I might do those.

--misty (running to get a crying baby)

P.S. Where are the logos?? Nobody wants to design anything?

Perlmonks condoms: "-wT" on one side, "use Bone::SafeSex;" on the other...

      --Chris

      e-mail jcwren
PM bondage gear with "use strict;" on it?

        I'll get my coat...

chris if you make them from polyester and they will be able to withstand 400F temperature, fine with me.

        --misty (in a semi-silly mood)
Okay, so it has to be polyester... How about bandanas or other items for wall hangings (something to spruce up the cube-farm at work)? They could definitely be poly, and could have both the logo and some artwork (like this from OeufMayo's post).

Cigarette papers were often used by intelligence agents when hand decrypting codes (like the Solitare code mentioned in Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon) because when you burn them the leave very little residue...

So the next time you're caught with DeCSS code, break out your Zippo...

I'd love a nice baseball cap with a good bright (legible from a distance) logo. The tie idea is a good one too, and you could print lots of code on that, though you wouldn't necessarily want it to help applicants in interviews!

Hmm... how about a quick-reference tie? Perl FAQ socks?

T-shirts with the monk vows... like
I vow to use perl everywhere I can, be it work, home, or supermarket. I vow to use strict & -w etc... etc... I'm usually better with pithy comments, but I'm still asleep... I'm sure the other monks could come up with five or ten good ones...

So many others out there, like myself, are under a draconian dress code at school/work. We strive to find new ways to show off our hacker prowess without violatng the dresscode too blatantly. What I request to aid the oppressed monks is a polo shirt (golf shirt). It would be preferbably white or that Vanhusen soft gray(don't bother searching the web for that) with a small (less than 2sq inch) slogan on the left breast. Some sample slogans could include:
    • Perlmonks.cult
    • Perlmonks.org
    • Wall = = master
    • $code++;
    • Perlmonks.cult
    • use strict;
    • purl rewlz
    • perl -wT
    • package main;
    • How do I use this?
    • php is lame

Mabye perlmonks.org could be embroidered on the back of the collar, right behind your neck. That would be schueeet.

Jayce^ I know a company (epromo.com) that is looking into making a "personal store funciont". Right now the syste (all in perl) let's you create an account, and add your logos, then it renders your logo onto the merchendise so you can preview what you would get. Might be something you would be interested in for this. Could create a Perlmonks store through that.

I'm thinking a poster & shirt of a Perl Monk. He could wear the robes of the noble monks, and be holding up a tablet with

    #! usr/bin/perl
    use strict;

inscribed upon it. Along the bottom or top it can say "Thou shalt use strict!" with possibly a storm background? The monk could also be standing on a cliff perhaps. With a crowd of programmers / people below.
