I don't have one and I'd like one. I sometimes think up conspiration theories on why my parents didn't give me one.

Try to fill in your name in American forms is not fun if you do not live in an American state (but the field is still required) and if your name is H.Merijn Brand. Worst thing that can happen is that semi-intelligent software changes that to Merijn H. Brand or simply refuses to accept.

My father served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. During Boot Camp, the Instructor asked him why my Dad left the 'middle name' part of a form empty.

"I don't have one" was the response.

"Don't be an idiot! Everyone has a middle name! What's your Christian name, the name you were given when you were baptised?"

"I'm a Jew, Chief Petty Officer! I don't have a Christian name!"

Dad made certain we all had middle names, to save us from having to do extra push-ups later in our lives...
