I went ahead and counted both my copies of Programming Perl, even though the old edition just serves as part of the 'wall o' books' bookend. How many O'Reilly books would be a really terrifying question...There was a day last month when I went on a binge and bought 12 (had to celebrate getting a new job :).

I've just spent 8 hours on a plane reading 'Programming the Perl DBI'. (Calgary airport bookshop had nothing of interest and I ALWAYS carry a good Perl book for contingency). An excellent book if you want to get your scripts to really annoy your DBA...

Does the Perl CD Bookshelf count as one book or 6. It consists of Perl in a Nutshell plus the full text of 6 O'Reilly books on CD

One. You can't browse a CD in the bathroom, on a plane about to take off, etc. Yes, you can throw the CD in a laptop, but a book is still more portable (and the flight attendant won't yell at you for opening a book) :)

I would seem to have to agree. CD books really aren't that good of a reference.

Yet copy and paste is a nice feature, beats the hell out of read and type. Also you can get this for a lot cheaper than buying the books.

I don't actually own any of the 'proper' Perl books, but I would not be without my Perl Quick Reference Guide.
I don't leave home without it.

My current fav is Joseph Hall's Effective Perl Programming: Writing Better Programs With Perl. Its layed out FAQ-like, with 60 bite size items of perl advice. A great bed-time read.

Object Oriented Perl is excellent. (I do have it. :) Expect a Slashdot review very soon, as I have been writing it the past few days. (E-mail Hemos and ask him to run more chromatic book reviews.)

Anything about Perl that comes from Manning Press is on my Must Read list now, after Elements of Programming with Perl.

I don't know how to answer the poll question, though. Does Programming Web Graphics with Perl and GNU Software count? Programming the Perl DBI certainly does, but what about Mastering Algorithms with Perl or even Practical Internet Groupware? I'm over 8 anyway. Good thing this isn't a "How many O'Reilly books did you purchase or obtain in the past year?" question.

I don't actually *have* it :), but Damian Conway's Object Oriented Perl is supposedly excellent. It's a Manning book, as is Andrew Johnson's Elements of Programming with Perl, which is also supposed to be quite good.

I've also read good reviews of Nigel Chapman's Perl: The Programmer's Companion and Joseph N. Hall and Randal Schwartz's Effective Perl Programming (the site also has Perl Recipes).

I sleep with the Perl Core Language, Little Black Book published by Coriolis under my pillow ;-) - I use it nearly every day, a very good reference book.

Elements of Programming in Perl by Andrew Johnson. Excellent into to programming and Perl. Good for experienced perl programmers as well.

I started with Learn Perl for Win32 in 21 Days from Sam's Publishing. (It was a copy from work.) I found it easy to learn from as a newbie and it's great for quick reference.

In my occasional uncharitable moods, I wonder if, instead of answering newbie questions, we should instead send them off to read a recommended Perl book, and only when they pass a quiz on basic Perl questions can they ask new ones. Then I take a deep breath, plaster a smile over my face, and take a walk around the building, and the feeling goes away.
