lakshmananindia has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi monks, Greets.

I'm using linux. Now I wanted to know whether it is possible to build a speech recognition software in perl. I googled, but I got only for windows.

So I request you monks, to give me some guidelines on how to start speech recognition in perl.

There are some Speech recognition modules what about Speech::Recognizer::ViaVoice Perl wrappers for IBM's ViaVoice speech recognition library.

Do a search on CPAN for speech recognition.

Well-known software is Festival. A typing this query on search.cpan.org will give you some pointers. I don't have any experience with speech recognition so I can't recommend any.

Update: The OP looks for speech recognition, while Festival is TTS (text-to-speech) system; sorry for misunderstanding.

Try PerlBox: http://perlbox.sourceforge.net/. I don't know that much about it, but it sounds like what you're looking for.

You may want to consult wikipedia's list of speech recognition projects, which includes at least 2 free, open source implementations.
