Poll: How should the =( )= be called???

by LanX (Bishop)
on Jan 12, 2010 at 15:31 UTC ( #816934=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Hi

There are some problems with the widespread naming for this idiom: =( )=

see Re^6: The NSFW Operator

But what does the community think is the most intuitive name?

I decided to improvise a poor mans poll to find an answer:

My willing servant, The Perlman will show you some of the discussed alternatives, please choose the ones you like by upvoting.

Only upvotes are counted, multiple votes are possible.

I will update the results at least every day, if you wanna see them in realtime just downvote the other alternatives.

If you wanna suggest other alternatives, be free to do so. If you don't wanna risk being downvoted send me a msg, and the Perlman will add it.

Have fun! 8)

Cheers Rolf

UPDATE: I'm not sure if the rep-system is really reliable...

As of 2010-01-12 23:23 GMT "Rolex" said "Reputation: 0 (no significant downvotes)"

ARGH ... The up and downs are not displayed separately if the sum is not negative... (why?)

UPDATE: Final results "As of 2010-01-31 17:04 GMT" are:

  • -6 (+7 -13) The Biplane Operator

Cos it squeezes a list into a scalar as demonstrated by this one-liner:

      perl -e"$|++;print(qq[\r( )]),select('','','',.1),print(qq[\r=()=]),s +elect('','','',0.2) while 1"

The current approach has the nice advantage of allowing multiple positive selections.
However I think that the number of participants will be greater if it is a "normal" poll
Rata (unsure which way he likes more)
Normal polls are only accessible one after the other and only for a limited timespan.

But unfortunately my idea of only counting upvotes and allowing downvotes to be ignored doesn't work... I can't see upvotes seperately if the sum is positive 8(

) (approximately (+8 -3)) ,please note, not all downvotes are really counted, since the monastery limits the number of "significant downvotes" per day. So downvotes for propositions which are further down the list don't show anymore...

UPDATE: no I don't consider this poll representative, but at least it allows multiple votes and dynamic adjustments/propositions, which is sometimes a nice alternative to the local standard polls.

I thought of "wristwatch", but liked "Rolex" for its similarity to "regex". Personally, I don't wear a watch. Nor did I vote.
Hmm wristwatch is somehow long and not handy.

"Rolex" is easier, but what I don't like is advertising for a brand. Same problem with "Seiko" or "Swatch"...

          BTW: You can still vote.

          Cheers Rolf

          LOL 8)

          > Can we consider this a preliminary election of candidates, and then do this all over again somehow, but with some sort of decent preferential voting method?

... can we consider that you to tell us how to do achieve this?

Option 1: Realizing it with perlmonk accounts => restriction to available mechanisms.

Option 2: Using external service with login => perlmonks have to register again, people get lost.

Option 3: Using external service without login => multiple votes can manipulate the result.

Option 4: user je44ery implements his wishes within the monastery...

          Cheers Rolf

        > oh oh ++ for u BrowserUK

unfortunately it was a bad idea to tell people to downvote whenever they want. In BUK's case I can't see the upvotes ... and coming late reduces the number of downvotes.

But for a beta this poll worked quite well because it's much more flexible than the usual approach....

        Cheers Rolf

... and I assume BrowserUk got some votes for the clever code he wrote to illustrate his naming-idea, not for the name itself ;-)

It shuold be called the Stupid Line-Noise Trick That Shouldn't Be Used In Production Code.

That name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

        > It shuold be called the Stupid Line-Noise Trick That Shouldn't Be Used In Production Code.

I'm curious, what exactly is your "Best Practice" alternative for production code?

        Cheers Rolf

If I need it in code, I would spell it
          = () =
=( )= equals headless penquin or stoned camel

... now that I think of it, it looks like a headless penquin with its fins out to the side :-)

... or the big nose and squinty eyes of a camel looking right at you
