I'm sorry, but I really don't see anything wrong with clever tricks, as long as they work well. "Can you code this in less symbols?" would be perfectly OK as a way to enhance mastery of other parts of the language, except that it should be "fewer symbols". I'm glad the author apologized. Had he not, I would not have. So there.
