cosmicperl has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi All,
  I've just had a lecture on DDBMS (Distributed DataBase Management systems). I've googled and can't find anything with regards to Perl and DDBMS or DRDBMS. Is there anything out there about DDBMS that Perl has been used with?

    A well designed and well written D(R)DBMS should hide the "ugliness" of being disributed for the simple user. There is no real reason why Perl could not access this with the usual DBI / DBD::* combo.

    DBD::Teradata is a good example I think.

    Update: added an example of a driver for a DRDBMS.

    A program should be light and agile, its subroutines connected like a string of pearls. The spirit and intent of the program should be retained throughout. There should be neither too little or too much, neither needless loops nor useless variables, neither lack of structure nor overwhelming rigidity." - The Tao of Programming, 4.1 - Geoffrey James

    There are Perl bindings for HBase and Cassandra. For HBase, take a look at hbase-thrift. For Cassandra, see Net::Cassandra.
