I read the whole list, and didn't see any real coherence. I kinda hoped the "named" cuddles would all have something to do with Perl/OS/Editor/Distribution/Whatever on-topic relation that matches, so a Camel/Dromedary would match Perl, a Lizard might be from SUSE, a devil to Debian, and several other IT related stuffed ones could probably be surfaced.
I've never seen a penguin as a bird, as it cannot fly. I know several other (extinct) birds cannot/could not fly either (dodo, emu, ostrich), but the penguin deserved a spot in this list far more than a few other entries to my honest opinion.
Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

Not Tux! Opus!!!
Yes, he would be 'Other Bird', but he is a long term fav and sits on my shelf at work (the version with the shower cap and hotel towel is at home). I had him way before Linus started coding his masterwerk...ergo way before Tux.
Also, I know this is an old thread but I had to....

It's a teddy bear. Not a "bear or koala". A koala just won't do. And not just any bear either.
A Teddy bear's goodness is measured on the Huggability Index, which is calculated from a few factors: color, feel, softness, and substance.
Color affects the introductory look and must mean something. Clean white is glowing (attracts childrens' attention best). Brown is traditional. Yellow and pink are acceptable, but it depends on your mood.
Feel: The fur of the teddy tells you what type of teddy it is. Soft is for sleeping, hard is for holding, and inbetween for ones various hugging needs.
Softness: When hugging a teddy it must give; noone wants to hug a brick wall. The stuffing used is very important, and how much there is.
Substance: Sometimes, the teddy has too much softness and it feels like it isn't there. A teddy with no resistance is no teddy at all.
To evaluate a candidate teddy on the huggability index before purchase, first make sure that noone is around. Stare at the teddy and appreciate its color. Then go in for the hug and decide how you feel, paying attention to all the factors on the index.
Note: The Huggability Index can also be used for your purchase of a Mac Mini.

- Raccoon
- Wooly mammoth
- Butterfly
I expect more from you, poll into which I put neither time nor effort.

A butterfly counts under the "other Perl mascot" option.
As for the others, like I said, I just can't list all animals, because if there's too many choices then people don't read them.
Also, if I have too many choices, the pollsters won't post the poll in first place. (They have a good reason for this: the poll takes up nodelet space in the default configuration.) This one is already pushing the limits. Just look at what they've done with my sports poll: down from 34 options to only 19.
Update: it's also useful that missing options start a conversation under the poll thread so we learn more than by just adding all options.

As a kid, I had two that were pretty equal:
- A mouse (almost all the fur had been worn off and my mom replaced the tail at some point) It's now sitting up on a dinner plate rail in my house (away from the stuffed-toy-killing dogs)
- A teddy bear made from an old fur coat (circa WWII) again, almost all the fur was worn off although a lot was gone before I got it (used to belong to my mom). It now sits in a place of honour at my parent's house.
As an adult, I would say either Dust Puppy or Tribbles | [reply] |

I have two small sons who are four and two
My four year old has a massive collection of at least 50 soft toys, including almost everything on the list above. His favourite is a traditional teddy bear. My favourite from his collection is a Bee, and I have it as my Facebook profile picture. (There are no insects on the list above)
My two year old is extremely attached to a plastic toy car. It is red and about 8 inches long. He cannot go to sleep without it. It looks quite hard and uncomfortable to cuddle at night.

Pig.
I used to place it on the fan-fold printer listings of the product I worked on - it described it pretty well. No fan-fold paper any more, but still plenty of software pigs out there.
Second favorite was a stuffed dinosaur, which we UNIX guys used to taunt the mainframe folks. One of our guys displeased them muchly by sticking a "Jurassic Park" poster on the door of the mainframe computer room. | [reply] |

Maybe as the poll author I should answer this. Here's my four favourites, in order of seniority. I have a small yellow rabbit in cyan clothes painted on him, which I got just a little after I was born, but he's spent a few years lost in the attic after we moved so now he's older than me. I have a very soft fuzzy large fat pink bear, who looks old and wise. I have a small brown classical teddy bear, clad in striped clothes so he looks like a circus perfomer, who is always smiling happily, and likes to help me in professional problems. Finally I have a large gray koala who never parts of his child.
