Here's another turtle for the fire:
PDL (``Perl Data Language'') gives standard Perl the ability to compactly store and speedily manipulate the large N-dimensional data arrays which are the bread and butter of scientific computing.The gubbins that do the manipulation are written in C for a speed boost, which might help if you can't get around your scaling problems.
