Ah, i see. That's because the SQL Standard stinks. Methinks some people on the standards committee have never actually used the language.
Anyway, the ANSI 99 standard is pretty well supported, and can do just about anything, though perhaps not in the fastest method.
Ultimately, the best methods are specific to the RDBMS, do to what they were aiming for.

be used, extreme care should be

have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
